1975: Congratulations, Shug Jordan

I'm pretty sure we've discussed Ralph "Shug" Jordan before. I'm a pretty big fan, so, if you know bad stuff about him, don't tell me. Anyway, I thought his last appearance on the weekly Auburn Football Review program was just so sweet. It aired at 5 on Sunday evening, Nov. 30, 1975, in Montgomery, Alabama. My favorite part is when his wife shows up at the end, and the South Central Bell Telephone dude presents the Jordans with a built-for-two, monogrammed stadium seat.

Congratulations, Coach and Mrs. Jordan. I hope you enjoy the next four and a half years together very much.

1975: What Was On TV Last Night?

Monday night after the Jerry Lewis telethon, we got to see Dolphins-Vikings on Channel 3. And, as you can see, even though it was just a preseason game, the rematch of Super Bowl VIII(!) was given significant play in The Miami News the following morning. It made 1A of the Minneapolis Tribune, too--though not with the above-the-fold, bigger-than-the-masthead alarm visible in passing by newsstands or vending boxes.

As previously reported, 6-year-old I raged and sobbed when the Dolphins' 1974 season ended in that horrible "Sea of Hands" game against the Raiders. By the time this preseason game turned up on NFL Monday Night Football nine months later, though, I was 7. I'd gone through Csonka, Kiick and Warfield (finally) actually leaving for the WFL, and a (probably necessary) stoicism had set in around my relationship to the Dolphins. 

Also if I wasn't already girlcrazy by Monday, Sept. 2, 1975, I was right on the precipice of it. Because at the first chili supper of the 1975-76 school year at Concord Elementary, when some sixth-graders did a lip-sync performance of "Saturday Night" by the Bay City Rollers, I was totally dazzled by at least two of the girls in my second-grade class. And I think that must've happened not long after the Bay City Rollers made their U.S. debut on Saturday Night Live with Howard Cosell, which was Oct. 4. 

So somewhere between Dec. 21, 1974, when the Dolphins lost to the Raiders, and a Monday night not long after Oct. 4, 1975, is when I tipped into being more interested in the girls than the Dolphins. Now, as to trying to more precisely pinpoint this change, I noted a little braincell of decades-old innocent sadness when I scrolled upon the following story today inside the Sept. 2, 1975, Miami News.

It was a sense of genuine discovery this morning, as though I felt at the time this was really bad news (and I would've been right; neither Anderson nor Buoniconti played in NFL75) and hadn't revisited the original feeling since. The intensity of that memory might indicate that my girlcraziness hadn't quite claimed dominance in my heart by the time of Monday Night Football game. But there's no way it hadn't taken hold by the Bay City Rollers thing a month later. And while I never quit loving the Dolphins after that, I never again cared about them as much as I cared about the girls.

For pretty much my whole life I've thought it was kind of cruel that the amazing Dolphins turned me on at such a young age, only to never achieve that same success since. But as I type this morning, I see grace and blessing in the timing--the Dolphins were at their best when I was least encumbered in enjoying their success, and whatever disappointments I experienced with them in the years since never consumed me.

In fact, the last moment that the Dolphins actually seemed like they might win another Super Bowl--in the third quarter of the Dec. 21 Dolphins-Vikings game in Week 16 of NFL02--is literally when my eventual wife and I started dating. The 2002 Dolphins were fantastic until the fourth quarter of that game. Then I left Matthew's before the game was over to go see her, and then we decided that day that we would be a thing, and then the Dolphins lost to the Vikings and didn't even make the playoffs, and now we are still a thing.

I've got more girl stuff going in my life than ever now--the wife and since a daughter, a female cat and a female dog. Happily, totally girlcrazy, still. I'm excited about the 2022 Dolphins; I think they might end up being pretty good. Heck, I'm excited about the 1975 Dolphins, and I know they end up being not super. Mostly, though, I'm just trying to be breathy Patti York at the 1975 Jerry Lewis telethon--"so strong and bold as life unfolds its mystery to me."

There's a boatload of stuff from Jerry Lewis's 1975 MDA telethon on YouTube. But I know you're busy, so just could just check out the next 15 minutes or so after this video starts ...

This was Frank Sinatra's first appearance in Jerry Lewis's 10 (so far) telethons. I really like his rich-guy moves in the breaks between the songs, and I really like his pingponging between covers of recent hits by other people (like "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown") and standards for which his are regarded as the definitive performances (like "They Can't Take That Away From Me"). He sure was good, wasn't he?

None of these songs appears to be available as a standalone video on YouTube. If they were out there, they would've each made this list. But, whatever, here are my 10 favorite songs otherwise from those most-of-two days over Labor Day weekend:

1975: Yale Bowl and Paint By Number

 

NFL preseason games always feel like they are going to be so much fun to watch, and then I always get bored with them pretty quickly and end up doing something else with the flicker of the TV in the background. Maybe I'll work on this paint-by-number kit during today's game from the Yale Bowl.

I spent a fair amount of time in 2017 whipping up these NFL paint-by-numbers from YouTube screen shots and some online filter application (perhaps to some NFL preseason games in the background). Anyway, I really like this one of the Jets' Emerson Boozer.

Emerson Boozer (of Augusta, Georgia) ranked No. 22 in career rushing yards entering NFL75, right behind Clem Daniels and right ahead of Calvin Hill. No. 22 in career rushing yards today is LeSean McCoy, right behind O.J. Simpson and right ahead of Warrick Dunn. 

I don't think that means much of anything, but I still think it's fun to think about. I sure like football, TV and the internet.

1975: Boxing/Pop Music Update

The world-champion heavyweight boxer remains 33-year-old Muhammad Ali of Louisville, Kentucky (though he is about to move to Berrien Springs, Michigan, for a while (Wikipedia is fantastic)). His next fight looks like it might be a thriller: Oct. 1 vs. No. 1 challenger Joe Frazier, 31, originally of Beaufort, South Carolina (though he has been in Philadelphia since going out on his own and catching a bus to there when he was 15 (fantastic!)). Ali lost to Frazier by unanimous decision on March 8, 1971, in New York. Then he beat Frazier by unanimous decision on Jan. 28, 1974, in New York. The rubber match is set for Quezon City, in the metro area of the Philippines capital, Manila.

Back in the United States, Ali is climbing a chart of a different sort. 

That song by Johnny Wakelin and the Kinshasa Band has been on the CASH BOX Top 100 Singles for 16 weeks and is up to No. 35 in the chart for the week ending today in 1975. That's a slow rise, and, yet, you might still have a sense that the song has been lingering for a good bit longer than even that:

In late 1972, Wakelin wrote and recorded the original version of the song, under the title "Hungarian Superman (Joe Bugner)" as an homage to the Hungarian-born British-Australian boxer by that name. The single failed to chart, and in 1973 Bugner lost 12-round decisions to former heavyweight champions Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier.

Wakelin got the idea of reworking the original song as an homage to Bugner's rival, the boxing champion Muhammad Ali who fought on 30 October 1974 in Kinshasa, Zaire, against George Foreman in a matchup known as The Rumble in the Jungle. Ali gained victory in the eighth round. Wakelin modified the song's original Eastern-European polka rhythm to reggae at a time when West Indian music was growing in popularity. The new song was Wakelin's "Black Superman (Muhammad Ali)" released in late 1974.

In January 1975 the song reached number seven on the singles charts of both the UK and Australia. By October of the same year, it had reached number one in Canada on the RPM Singles Chart. It also spent six months in the US Billboard Hot 100 in more than one chart run in 1975, eventually peaking at No. 21 in September of that year.

The Diane Linkletter story makes me so sad, and The Diane Linkletter Story makes me so mad. Maybe because the Alex Jones garbage has been so much in the news the last couple of days, I thought of the John Waters satire when I saw this note that Art Linkletter was going to be on with Tom Snyder late tonight in 1975. 

I didn't find a clip of Linkletter's Tomorrow Show appearance, but we can imagine what he said. He made the rounds. (... His hair has gone grey/He passes every day/They say he walks the length of the city ...)
