25.  Creighton:  578-269

I would rearrange the top 10 as follows:

1.  UConn
2.  Duke
3.  Kansas
4.  UNC
5.  Florida
6.  Kentucky
7.  Villanova
8.  Michigan St.
9.  Syracuse
10.  Gonzaga

I think I would also rank UVA ahead of Maryland, and I would put Arizona and Wisconsin ahead of Memphis.  But the rest of the list looks pretty good to me.

NFL Week Two Rankings and Survivor Pick

Here is the latest NFL top ten from ESPN:

1.  Buffalo:  1-0
2.  Philadelphia:  1-0
3.  Baltimore:  0-1
4.  Green Bay:  1-0
5.  Kansas City:  0-1
6.  Washington:  1-0
7.  Los Angeles:  1-0
8.  Detroit:  0-1
9.  San Diego:  1-0
10.  Tampa Bay:  1-0

Miami is number 26.

Once again, the NFL schedulers are generous with the fans.  Tonight, we get the Number-4 Packers hosting Number-6 Washington.  Sunday afternoon we get a Super Bowl rematch, with the Number-5 Chiefs hosting the Number-2 Eagles.  So it should be another good weekend in front of the tube.

Now for Survivor Pool.  We barely made it last week, but in Survivor Pool we just say how, not how many.  This week one game stands out:  the Ravens, at home, are favored by 11 1/2 points over the Browns.  I normally avoid divisional games, but this game is far and away our best chance given the rest of the schedule -- and I really don't think the Ravens are going to start the season oh and two.  So I'm picking Baltimore to survive.

Survivor picks so far (home teams listed first):

1.  Denver 20 - 12 Tennessee

Life doesn't get easier for the Bulls.  On Saturday, September 13, the Bulls will defend the U.C.F.C. in Miami, Florida against the University of Miami Hurricanes, who are currently ranked Number 5 in the AP Poll.

Thirty-Two Franchises: Baltimore Ravens

Have participated in the NFL since the 1996 Season.

All-Time Record:  268-199-1 (.574)

The Baltimore Colts played 423 regular season games in the NFL.  The Baltimore Ravens have played 468.  If the two Baltimore franchises were combined, then their history looks like this:

1953-1983:  222-194-7 (.534)
1996-2024:  268-199-1 (.574)
Total:  490-393-8 (.554)

So the Baltimore teams, combined, have a better winning percentage than any Franchise other than Dallas and Green Bay.  Baltimore also has three Super Bowl Titles -- despite not having a team from 1984 through 1995.  Lots of towns take pride in their "Blue Collar" football culture, but most of them have not been able to keep pace with Charm City.

Super Bowl Record:  2-0 (XXXV, XLVII) (2000, 2012)

Top Passer:  Joe Flacco (38,245 yds)
Top Rusher:  Jamal Lewis (7,801 yds)
Top Receiver:  Derrick Mason (5,777 yds)
Top Coach:  John Harbaugh (172 wins)

Top All-Time Player Based on Approximate Value:  Ray Lewis (AV of 224)

And that's all.  Let's go 2025-26 NFL!

Thirty-Two Franchises: Dallas Cowboys

Have participated in the NFL since the 1960 season.

All-Time Record:  569-423-6 (.574)

Super Bowl Record:  5-3 (VI, XII, XXVII, XXVIII, XXX) (1971, 1977, 1992, 1993, 1995)

Here are the three eras of Cowboy football:

1960-1988:  Tom Landry Era:  250-162-6 (.607) (Two Super Bowl Championships)
1989-1993:  Jimmy Johnson Era:  44-36-0 (.550) (Two Super Bowl Championships)
1994-2025:  Jerry Jones Era:  275-225-0 (.550) (One Super Bowl Championship)

The Cowboys have not played for the NFC title since the 1995 Season.

Top Passer:  Tony Romo (34,183 yds)
Top Rusher:  Emmitt Smith (17,162 yds)
Top Receiver:  Jason Witten (12,977 yds)
Top Coach:  Tom Landry (250 wins)

Top All-Time Player Based on Approximate Value:  Emmitt Smith (AV of 162)

Emmitt Smith has the highest AV of any running back.

Thirty-Two Franchises: Green Bay Packers

Have participated in the NFL since the 1921 Season.

All-Time Record:  810-604-38 (.572)

The Packers have the best record of all the NFL teams that were in the League before World War II began:

Packers:  .572
Bears:  .553
Steelers:  .538
Giants:  .522
Rams:  .507
Eagles:  .500
Washington:  .497
Lions:  .461
Cardinals:  .422

Super Bowl Record:  4-1 (I, II, XXXI, XLV) (1966, 1967, 1996, 2010)

Remarkably, for all their success, the Packers have been to the Super Bowl only once since 1997.  During that time, the Packers lost the NFC title game in the following seasons:  2007, 2014, 2016, 2019, and 2020.

Top Passer:  Brett Favre (61,655 yds)
Top Rusher:  Ahman Green (8,322 yds)
Top Receiver:  Donald Driver (10,137 yds)
Top Coach:  Curly Lambeau (209 wins)

Interestingly, the Packers won five NFL titles between 1961 and 1967, but no one from those teams is represented on the list above.

Top All-Time Player Based on Approximate Value:  Aaron Rodgers (AV of 231)

Rodgers's regular season record as a starter at Green Bay:  153-87-1 (.637)
Favre's regular season record as a starter at Green Bay:  160-93-0 (.632)
Bart Starr's regular season record as a starter at Green Bay:  94-57-6 (.618)

Vince Lombardi's regular season record at Green Bay was 95-36-5 (.717).  Lombardi's record in the playoffs at Green Bay:  9-1.

NFL Week One and Survivor Pick

The NFL Season starts on Thursday.  Here is ESPN's first Top Ten power ranking for the year:

1.  Baltimore:  0-0
2.  Buffalo:  0-0
3.  Detroit:  0-0
4.  Philadelphia:  0-0
5.  Kansas City:  0-0
6.  Tampa Bay:  0-0
7.  Denver:  0-0
8.  Los Angeles:  0-0
9.  Minnesota:  0-0
10.  Green Bay: 0-0

Washington begins the season at number 11.  Miami begins at 22.

The NFL always likes to give us some good matchups for Week One, and sure enough we have a rare 1 v. 2 matchup, with the Ravens going to Buffalo for a matchup with the Bills on Sunday Night.  Also, Number-10 Green Bay will host Number-3 Detroit on Sunday Afternoon.  So the season will be off to a fun start.

Once again, we are going to try our hand at Survivor Pool.  Last year, the Bengals let us down in Week One, losing to a dreadful Patriots team at home.  We can take some consolation from the fact that this lost ultimately cost Cincinnati a spot in the playoffs, but we would like to do better.

Week One is always tough for Survivor Pools, because the League generally likes to match up good teams with good teams, and it also schedules a number of rivalry games.  For example, I would never want to use Giants/Washington, Philly/Dallas, San Diego/Kansas City, or Cincinnati/Cleveland -- to pick a few examples from Week One -- as a Survivor choice.  In general, you want a team that's (1) favored, (2) at home, (3) against a non-divisional opponent.  Also, you'd like to avoid special night games.

With this background, I'm going with Denver over Tennessee.  This game will be played on Sunday afternoon, in Denver, and the Broncos are favored by eight points.  I believe Denver will win this game and be tough all year.  So I'm taking the Broncos.

Thirty-Two Franchises: Chicago Bears

Have participated in the NFL since the 1920 Season.

All-Time Record:  798-646-42 (.553)

1920:  Decatur Staleys:  10-1-2 (.909)
1921:  Chicago Staleys:  9-1-1 (.900)
1922-2025:  Chicago Bears:  779-644-39 (.547)

Without their two years as the Staleys, the Bears would trail the Chiefs, the Dolphins, the Vikings, and the Patriots in winning percentage.

Super Bowl Record:  1-1 (XX) (1985)

Top Passer:  Jay Cutler (23,443 yds)
Top Rusher:  Walter Payton (16,726 yds)
Top Receiver:  Johnny Morris (5,059 yds)
Top Coach:  George Halas (318 wins)

Halas holds the record for most wins with a single team.  He coached the Bears from 1920 through 1929, from 1933 through 1942, and from 1946 through 1967.  His last season, at the age of 72, he went 7-6-1.  In 40 seasons, he went 318-148-31 (.682) in the regular season.  Since then, the Bears have gone 480-498-11 (.491).  In other words, the post-Halas Bears have almost the same record as the Bills, who are 486-505-8 (.490).

Mike Ditka's regular season record coaching the Bears was 106-62-0 (.631).

Top All-Time Player Based on Approximate Value:  Walter Payton (AV of 167)

William Perry finished with an AV of 59 in 138 games.  Jim McMahon had an AV of 49 in 66 games for the Bears.  His record as a starter was 46-15-0.

Thirty-Two Franchises: Kansas City Chiefs

Began in the AFL in 1960; joined the NFL for the 1970 Season.

All-Time Record:  547-441-12 (.553)

1960-1962:  Dallas Texans:  25-17-0 (.595)
1963-2025:  Kansas City Chiefs:  522-424-12 (.552)

The Chiefs have the best all-time record of any former AFL team.

As we get toward the top of this list, the number of successful franchises that began in the 1960's is really striking.  There are eight MLB franchises that started in the 1960's.  Only one of them has an all-time record above .500:

Astros:  .503
Angels:  .495
Brewers:  .489
Mets:  .484
Nationals:  .482
Royals:  .477
Rangers:  .476
Padres:  .468

The NFL has 14 franchises that started in the 1960's, and seven of them have all-time winning records.  It's a tribute to the NFL that it was so successful at integrating these teams into the rest of the league.

Super Bowl Record:  4-3 (IV, LIV, LVII, LVIII) (1969, 2019, 2022, 2023)

Top Passer:  Patrick Mahomes (32,352 yds) (Mahomes is 89-23 in the regular season, and 17-4 in the playoffs)
Top Rusher:  Jamaal Charles (7,260 yds)
Top Receiver:  Travis Kelce (12,151 yds)
Top Coach:  Andy Reid (143 wins)

Reid is the Top Coach for both the Chiefs and the Eagles.  No other coach is the leader for two different franchises.  Reid's all-time record as a coach is 273-146-1.  Here are the top 10 coaches in total wins:

1.  Don Shula:  328
2.  George Halas:  318
3.  Bill Belichick:  302
4.  Andy Reid;  273
5.  Tom Landry:  250
6.  Curly Lambeau:  226
7.  Paul Brown:  213
8.  Marty Schottenheimer:  200
9.  Chuck Noll:  193
10.  Dan Reeves:  190

Here are the top coaches by winning percentage (10 season minimum):

1.  John Madden:  .759
2.  Vince Lombardi:  .738
3.  George Allen:  .712
4.  Ray Flaherty:  .684
5.  George Halas:  .682
6.  Don Shula:  .677
7.  Paul Brown:  .672
8.  Tony Dungy:  .668
9.  Andy Reid:  .651
10.  George Seifert:  .648

Among coaches with at least 15 seasons in the NFL, Reid is number four in winning percentage, trailing only Halas, Shula, and Brown.

Top All-Time Player Based on Approximate Value:  Will Shields (AV of 157)

Mahomes has an AV of 123 in 112 games.

Thursday, August 28, 2025

Thirty-Two Franchises: Miami Dolphins

Began in the AFL in 1966; joined the NFL for the 1970 Season.

All-Time Record:  504-408-4 (.553)

Super Bowl Record:  2-3 (VII, VIII) (1972, 1973)

The 1972 Dolphins were the last NFL team to finish the season undefeated.

Top Passer:  Dan Marino (61,361 yds)
Top Rusher:  Larry Csonka (6,737 yds)
Top Receiver:  Mark Duper (8,869 yds)
Top Coach:  Don Shula (257 wins)

Larry Csonka averaged 4.5 yds/carry for the Dolphins.  Jim Kiick carried for 3,644 yds for the Dolphins.  He averaged 3.7 yds/carry.  Mercury Morris carried for 3,877 yds for the Dolphins.  He averaged 5.1 yds/carry.  Paul Warfield had 3,355 receiving yards for the Dolphins.  He averaged 21.5 yds/catch.

Shula accounts for 50.7 percent of Miami's wins -- only one coach in the NFL accounts for a higher percentage of his franchises wins, and we haven't met that coach yet.

Shula's record in Miami was 257-133-2 (.659)  Without Shula as the head coach, the Dolphins have gone 247-275-2 (.473).

Top All-Time Player Based on Approximate Value:  Dan Marino (AV of 216)

Marino was the starting quarterback for the Dolphins from 1983 to 1999.  His record as a starter was 147-93-0, and he had an AV of 216 in 242 games.  Bob Griese was the starting quarterback from 1967 through 1979.  His record as a starter was 92-56-3, and he had an AV of 138 in 161 games.

Thirty-Two Franchises: Minnesota Vikings

Have participated in the NFL since the 1961 season.

All-Time Record:  537-438-11 (.551)

Super Bowl Record:  0-4

In the 1976 season, the Vikings went 11-2-1, went to the Super Bowl for the fourth time, and were crushed by the Raiders.  Since then, there have been fifteen seasons in which the Vikings won at least ten games.  There have been nine other seasons in which the Vikings went to the playoffs without winning ten games.  So that's 24 trips to the NFC playoffs in the last 49 seasons, which is very good.  In none of those seasons did they win the NFC.  They made it to the NFC title game in the seasons for 1987, 1998, 2000, 2009, and 2017.  They lost every time.

Top Passer:  Fran Tarkenton (33,098 yds)
Top Rusher:  Adrian Peterson (11,747 yds)
Top Receiver:  Cris Carter (12,383 yds)
Top Coach:  Bud Grant (158 wins)

Bud Grant coached the Vikings from 1967 through 1985.  His record was 158-96-5 in the regular season, and 10-12 in the playoffs.

Top All-Time Player Based on Approximate Value:  Carl Eller (AV of 177).

Thirty-Two Franchises: New England Patriots

Began in the AFL in 1960; joined the NFL for the 1970 Season.

All-Time Record:  545-446-9 (.550)

1960-1970:  Boston Patriots:  65-80-9 (.448)
1971-2025:  New England Patriots:  480-366-0 (.567)

It's interesting to me that the New England Patriots have never played a tie game.

Super Bowl Record:  6-5 (XXXVI, XXXVIII, XXXIX, XLIX, LI, LIII) (2001, 2003, 2004, 2014, 2016, 2018)

Top Passer:  Tom Brady (74,571 yds)
Top Rusher:  Sam Cunningham (5,453 yds)
Top Receiver:  Stanley Morgan (10,352 yds)
Top Coach:  Bill Belichick (266 wins)

The scope of what Belichick and Brady accomplished between 2001 and 2018 is staggering.  Belichick coached in 48.8 percent of the regular season wins that the Patriots have ever had.  And Brady's numbers are unbelievable.  Patrick Mahomes has thrown for 32,352 yards with the Chiefs.  If Mahomes averaged 4,200 yards of passing every seasons, for the next ten seasons, he would still have fewer passing yards than Tom Brady had with the Patriots.  And, of course, these figures do not include the 14,643 yards that Tom Brady had with the Buccanneers.

Top All-Time Player Based on Approximate Value:  Tom Brady (AV of 285)

Tom Brady is, of course, the all-time NFL leader in Approximate Value.  But consider this:  He would still be the leader even if you didn't count any of the value he delivered for Tampa Bay.  His New England total alone is higher than Drew Brees's total with two different teams -- and Brees is in second place.  Here's the top ten players in career AV (remember, this stat only goes back to 1960):

1.  Tom Brady:  326
2.  Drew Brees:  277
3.  Peyton Manning:  271
4.  Brett Favre:  259
5.  Jerry Rice:  251
6.  Aaron Rodgers:  243
7.  Fran Tarkenton:  233
8.  Reggie White:  231
9.  Bruce Smith:  229
10.  Ray Lewis:  224

Brady's record as a starter in the regular season for New England was 219-64-0 (.774).

Thirty-Two Franchises: San Francisco 49ers

Began in the AAFC in 1946; joined the NFL for the 1950 season.  Prior to the early 1970's, the Steelers and the 49ers were two of the worst franchises in the League.

All-Time Record:  630-526-16 (.545)

The 49ers have an all-time regular season record of 77-70-3 against the Rams.

Super Bowl Record:  5-3 (XVI, XIX, XXIII, XXIV, XXIX) (1981, 1984, 1988, 1989, 1994)

Top Passer:  Joe Montana (35,124 yds)
Top Rusher:  Frank Gore (11,073 yds)
Top Receiver:  Jerry Rice (19,247 yds)
Top Coach:  George Seifert (98 wins)

Seifert coached the 49ers from 1989 through 1996, and finished with a record of 98-30-0 (.766).
Bill Walsh coached the 49ers from 1979 through 1988, and finished with a record of 92-59-1 (.609).  The main difference is that Walsh went 8-24 in his first two seasons.

Joe Montana went 100-39-0 as a starter in the regular season for the Niners.
Steve Young's regular season record as a Niner starter was 91-33-0.

Top All-Time Player Based on Approximate Value:  Jerry Rice (AV of 216).

Thirty-Two Franchises: Pittsburgh Steelers

Have participated in the NFL since the 1933 season.

All-Time Record:  681-585-22 (.538)

1933-1939:  Pittsburgh Pirates:  22-55-3 (.286)
1940-1942:  Pittsburgh Steelers:  10-20-3 (.333)
1943:  Phi/Pit Eagles/Steelers (already included in Eagles)
1944:  Chi/Pit Cards/Steelers (already included in Cardinals)
1945-2025:  Pittsburgh Steelers:  649-510-16 (.560)

Super Bowl Record:  6-2 (IX, X, XIII, XIV, XL, XLIII) (1974, 1975, 1978, 1979, 2005, 2008)

Top Passer:  Ben Roethlisberger (64,088 yds)
Top Rusher:  Franco Harris (11,950 yds)
Top Receiver:  Hines Ward (12,083 yds)
Top Coach:  Chuck Noll (193 wins)

Noll coached the Steelers from 1969 through 1991, and retired with a record of 193-148-1 (.566).

Top All-Time Player Based on Approximate Value:  Ben Roethlisberger (AV of 208)

Roethlisberger was the starting quarterback for the Steelers from 2004 through 2021.  His record over that time was 165-81-1, with 418 TD's and 211 INT's.  He had an AV of 208 in 249 games.

Terry Bradshaw was the starting quarterback for the Steelers from 1970 through 1982.  His record over that time was 107-51-0, with 212 TD's and 210 INT's.  Bradshaw had an AV of 140 in 168 games.

Thirty-Two Franchises: Indianapolis Colts

Have participated in the NFL since the 1953 season.  Not to be confused with the Baltimore Colts who participated in the AAFC from 1947 to 1949, and who also appeared in the NFL in 1950.  That team, which went 11-40-1 between 1947 and 1950, is defunct.

All-Time Record:  564-510-8 (.525)

1953-1983:  Baltimore Colts:  222-194-7 (.534)
1984-2025:  Indianapolis Colts:  342-316-1 (.520)

Super Bowl Record:  2-2 (V, XLI) (1970, 2006)

Top Passer:  Peyton Manning (54,828 yds)
Top Rusher:  Edgerrin James (9,226 yds)
Top Receiver:  Marvin Harrison (14,580 yds)

Taylor was an All-Pro every year from 1981 through 1986, and then was an All-Pro again in 1988 and 1989.  He had an AV of 192 in only 184 games.  To put that in perspective, Merlin Olsen had an AV of 167 in 208 games, Carl Eller had an AV of 180 in 225 games, and Ray Lewis had an AV of 224 in 228 games.  At his peak, Lawrence Taylor was almost certainly the greatest defensive player in the history of the NFL.
