Pope Update

Here's what will happen.  Over the next few months, we will start to see stories about how Kentucky has done "surprisingly well" in the transfer portal, and how the team looks "much better," and that the Cats can definitely "make a run" if everyone "stays healthy."  Next November, UK will start off somewhere around Number 15 in the AP poll, and all the usual suspects will write articles trying to bait UK fans into complaining about Pope, or the Administration, or the team.

None of it will work.  No matter what everyone tries, there will be no buzz around next year's UK team.  No buzz (outside of the type of folks who go to Keeneland) around the UK / U of L game in Lexington.  No buzz about whoever we play in that Champions' Classic where we get embarrassed every year.  No buzz about the Gonzaga game.  No buzz about that December Classic where we played St. John's this season.  No buzz about the SEC regular season, or the games with Tennessee.  Certainly no buzz in the run-up to the annual blowouts by Alabama and Florida.  No buzz at the SEC Tournament.  And no buzz when they miss the NCAA's / lose in the first round / lose in the second round.

After the blowout against Michigan State, I had no interest in any game UK played the rest of the year.  I knew those injured players wouldn't make a difference, and I never even bothered to learn their names.  I knew they weren't reaching the SEC semi-finals.  I knew they weren't reaching the NCAA Regionals.  My only interest was in whether they would lose to Santa Clara, because I thought that would put more pressure on the Administration.  But of course, they pulled that one out -- only to be drilled by 19 against Iowa State (and T.J. Otzelberger!) on Sunday.  After the game, one of the Iowa State players basically said that they expected UK to give up in the second half -- and that's exactly what happened.

The proles are done.  They aren't reading any more articles.  They aren't following any more tweets.  They aren't scanning any more transfer lists.  Most Kentuckians learn early in life that it's a mistake to waste your life on foolish hopes.  They know it's not getting any better under this coach, and as far as they can tell, most people in Lexington couldn't care less.  After all, if they cared, they would have at least interviewed T.J. Otzelberger.

So next year, Lexington will get to have the Cats all to itself.  The Jeeves and Wooster types in the Bluegrass were always embarrassed by the UK fan base, and now they get to see what it's like when we stay home.  My guess is that they will find it less entertaining -- and certainly less profitable -- than it used to be.  And maybe that will change their mind.

1978: What's on TV Monday Nights?

Once NFL78 finishes its regular season, Monday nights portend as a Channel 12 situation from prime-time wire to prime-time wire ...

However, football season is only now getting started and extends to 16 games for the first time, and so here's a coin (apparently created by or for a Lexington TV station, now offered by an eBay seller in Bagdad) embossed with the 1978 lineup of ABC's NFL Monday Night Football games in 1978 for us all to coordinate calendars accordingly ...

As for that 7-8 p.m. Central hour before kickoff, I was never that much of a Kotter guy, anyway, so I'm not going to be any too conflicted about giving WKRP ("a hilarious, new comedy with exceptionally strong youth appeal") a try. And I imagine I will stick right with Phyllis George, whom I love (and with whom I once rode on a helicopter from Barkley Regional to a field somewhere down in Graves, Fulton or Hickman counties), until time for Frank, Howard and Dandy Don on Monday nights this fall or M*A*S*H Season 7 and One Day at a Time Season 4 in the new year.

Finally, I want to send a special 1978 Desk shoutout to Lou Grant (and YouTube compiler "mtmepisodes2"). The show's 1977-78 Season 1 (TV78) was fantastic, and Season 2 episodes don't start until Sept. 25. So that leaves us all time to acquaint or re-acquaint ourselves with "Animal," Mrs. Pynchon, Billie, Joe and all of Lou's new friends around the Los Angeles Tribune newsroom.

The Class 6A Football Playoffs

This was the most exciting 6A football playoffs I can remember.  Louisville St. Xavier, who was favored to win the whole thing, didn't even make it to the quarter-finals.  They were stunned in the round of 16 by Male, who beat St. X 22-21 in overtime.  That was St. X's only loss to a Kentucky team all year -- the Tigers had already beaten Male 24-10 back on September 2.  With St. X out of the way, the path was clear for one of the most dramatic playoffs at any level in KHSAA history:

Nov. 18, 2022:

Lou. Ballard 43 - 7 Madison Cent.

Lou. Male 23 - 10 Henderson Co.

Lex. Bryan Station 10 - 7 Lou. Trinity

Bullitt East 28 - 15 Cent. Hardin

You will not see very many years in which neither Trinity nor St. X reaches the semi-finals.  I wonder if CAL is taking players who would have attended Trinity or St. X in the past.

Nov. 25, 2022:

Lou. Ballard 20 - 24 Lou. Male

With 30 seconds to go, Male trailed 20-17, but the Bulldogs had the ball on fourth and goal from the 1.  Instead of kicking a field goal to tie the game, Male went for the win -- and Ballard stopped them at the goal line.  Now, backed up against its own end zone, Ballard just needed to run out the last 30 seconds to win the game.  They couldn't do it.  They fumbled the ball, Male recovered, and scored the game winning touchdown.

Lex. Bryan Station 41 - 55 Bullitt East

This was like a Big XII game -- back and forth all evening.  Late in the game, the teams were tied at 41.  But BEHS took a 48-41 lead on a 32-yard TD pass with 2:08 left.  The BEHS defense held, and then sealed the win with a 50-yard touchdown run with 46 seconds to go.

Dec. 3, 2022:

Lou. Male 27 - 28 Bullitt East (at Kroger Field, Lexington)

Amazingly, the last game was the best one of all.  With 53 seconds left, Male led 27-20, when Bullitt East scored a touchdown to move within one point.  Instead of kicking the extra point, the Chargers decided to go for two.  They then ran a crazy play -- the QB took a shotgun snap, handed off to the man-in-motion, who pitched it back to a receiver to set up what looked like a reverse -- except the receiver then THREW A PASS to the quarterback who walked into the end zone with the two points that won the state championship for Bullitt East.  Just incredible.  The most exciting KHSAA football playoff bracket I can remember.  Would love to read a good book about this whole season.

By the way, and for the record, Lex. Frederick Douglass beat Bryan Station 52-7 in the first game of the year.  Lex. Frederick Douglass beat Boyle County, the 4A Champ, 37-6.  Lex. Frederick Douglass was really good.

Mayfield (14-1) finished with a ranking of number 25, and was (of course), the top-ranked team west of Owensboro.  Union County (12-1) was number 34, Tilghman (6-7) was number 38, and Madisonville (6-7) was number 60.

The Class 5A Football Playoffs

We often complain that there's not enough drama in the KHSAA Football playoffs, especially in the upper classes.  And, of course, Western Kentucky doesn't play as much of a role in the upper classes, which also drains our interest.  But this year, the 5A playoffs featured Frederick Douglass High School of Lexington, which was probably the best team in the whole Commonwealth.

Frederick Douglass High School is located in the eastern side of Lexington.  It opened in August 2017 and was constructed to relieve overcrowding at Bryan Station and Henry Clay High Schools.  Now when I was a kid, there were four public high schools in Lexington, and they were always designated in the newspapers as follows:

Lex. Lafayette

Lex. Tates Creek

In 1990, they added Paul Laurence Dunbar High School.  This was the second Lexington Dunbar.  The first Lexington Dunbar had been one of the schools for African Americans during the era of segregation and it had a legendary basketball program before being closed in 1967.  And in 2017 they added Douglass.  To me, these schools should follow the same naming convention as the others:

This game started at 7 PM on Saturday night.  It was the last game of the Championship Weekend, and of course the last game of the season.  Lex. Frederick Douglass finished with a perfect record of 15-0, and outscored its opponents by 611-70.  It also finished the season as the Number One Team in Kentucky according to MaxPreps.  The web page for MaxPreps has rankings going back to 2004, and this is the first time a school from Lexington has finished the year with the Number One ranking.  Here's the breakdown since 2004:

This week the KHSAA will play its football championships at what I still think of as Commonwealth Stadium in Lexington.  Here are the finalists, along with some notes about teams from western Kentucky.  MaxPreps rankings are in parentheses:

Crittenden County lost 24-12 in the quarter-finals in Louisville against Holy Cross (Louisville).

Murray lost 49-14 at Mayfield in the Round of 16.

The Diane Linkletter story makes me so sad, and The Diane Linkletter Story makes me so mad. Maybe because the Alex Jones garbage has been so much in the news the last couple of days, I thought of the John Waters satire when I saw this note that Art Linkletter was going to be on with Tom Snyder late tonight in 1975. 

I didn't find a clip of Linkletter's Tomorrow Show appearance, but we can imagine what he said. He made the rounds. (... His hair has gone grey/He passes every day/They say he walks the length of the city ...)

Kentucky High-School Marching Band 2021, Finals

The 2021 Kentucky Music Educators Association high-school state champions were Owensboro Catholic in Class A, Fort Mitchell Beechwood in Class 2A, Murray in Class 3A, Anderson County in Class 4A and Lexington Lafayette in Class 5A. The finals took place a couple of Saturdays ago at Kroger Field in Lexington, and it really was quite a thrilling affair.

 

As a first-year band dad, I was pretty much a newcomer to this whole culture. I mean, I was on the periphery of it when we were kids, and I feel confident I've read more Funky Winkerbean than a large majority of Americans have in the last 50 years, and I married into a marching-band family, and I've now lived in a town for 13 years where it quickly became clear that marching band is more of the town's identity than, say, football or basketball. But being ushered through the season by my own kid, selling the hamburgers, starting to understand what "phasing" is, answering the questions at church the next morning about how they did at some out-of-town competition on a Saturday, helplessly riding the ups and downs in the stands with my own wife sharing a pride that we, of course, uniquely in this whole world share ... wow, it's a whole-new experience, baby.

And I've still got a lot to learn. Lot about how the judging works. Lot about the history (the Wikipedia page and KYBAND.com are great). Fortunately, it appears as though I'm going to have some time to learn that stuff. I pray so. My daughter got invited, along with a lot of other eighth-graders, to join the varsity marching-band, and, after some long consideration of the tremendous commitment, she decided to give it a go because she said she felt she needed something new in her life and an additional pocket of friends. Thank God she loved it. Thank God she's healthy. Thank God my wife and I are. Please, God ... more of all of this, please.

The Madisonville-North Hopkins Marching Maroons made it as far as the Class 4A semifinals, which were contested at Bourbon County High in Paris the morning of Oct. 30. They were one of 12 bands in the state that advanced to that cold and rainy competition, and, with my whole heart and brain, I know theirs was absolutely the best performance.

 

The Marching Maroons finished 11th. 

I then sat through the entire colder and rainier Class 4A finals at Kroger Field that same night, and I believe the judges were absolutely correct in their rankings of the six bands that performed there and then. 

Isn't it sweet that we are made that way?
