Kentucky High-school Football, Class 3A Round of 16

Class 3A might well not be done with the blowouts:

-- Adair County made this trip out to Paducah Augusta Tilghman and lost, 41-7, last season.

-- Trigg County is 7-4, but the Wildcats lost, 45-0, to Tilghman on Oct. 17. Bowling Green South Warren ended the season as the top-ranked team in the state.

-- Wayne County lost at Corbin, 48-7, on Oct. 3.

-- Bourbon County lost at Garrard County, 32-12, on Oct. 10.

-- Pike County Central lost at Belfry, 43-14, on Oct. 24.

Bell County at Louisville Central in Region 3 does not figure to be lopsided, however. Will the senior Bobcats who've been around for all three of the previous varsity seasons end at the hands of Central finally move past the Yellowjackets? In 2011, Central beat Bell, 26-0, in the regional championship. In 2012, Central won at Bell, 14-10, in the regional final. Last year, Central beat visiting Bell, 14-11, in this same, regional-semi round.

This football season to remember comes on the heels of the winningest baseball season in over two decades.

I've heard there was snow in 1993 . . . anyone recall. The cellphone photo we sent (above) was taken between KY 80 & I-75 by Jera Kessler, who's riding in our unit of the ADAIR CONVOY. These kids have never performed in the snow - but I've seen them in all kind of weather. I KNOW they have it in them to win No. 21 for ADAIR County High."

-- A little later on Nov. 1, a reader confirmed, "Shamarie right: 1993 State finals had rain, sleet and snow."

-- Even after the marching Indians arrived in Richmond and had advanced through semi-state that day, Shamarie just kept right on coordinating promotions. "We're hoping a lot of ADAIR fans will join us here."

-- This is not heaven; no, it's Adair County. The Indians did not win their state championship; they finished second. The trophy went to Russell County. "Of course we had hoped for the championship at State," she said. "But we're cool that if it had to go to another school, it stayed so close to home."

No. 10 Elizabethtown had a couple of three-touchdown-plus losses within Class 3A during the regular season; otherwise, I'm not ready to write off any of the rest of the BluegrassPreps.com top 10 as contenders for the state championship. No. 1 Bowling Green South Warren and No. 6 Paducah Augusta Tilghman are my favorites in Region 1; No. 2 Corbin, No. 4 Louisville Central and No. 5 Bell County, in Region 2; No. 7 Estill County, No. 8 Garrard County, No. 9 Russell and unranked Bourbon County, in Region 3, and No. 3 Belfry (the defending state champ) in Region 4. Mason County at Estill might be the best game of any of the six brackets tonight; both teams are 8-2.

Kentucky High-school Football, Week 3

Here are my favorites of this weekend's Kentucky High School Athletic Association football games:

Caldwell County (3-0, No. 1 in the Associated Press poll for Class 2A) at Trigg County (2-1, 3A)--Well, I, too, think the "139 Bowl" name is really cool, and this, consequently, qualifies for my favorite fan-bus trip of the night. My guess is this means Caldwell and Trigg do consider each other their biggest rivals.

Newport Central Catholic (1-2, AP 2A No. 4) at Independence Simon Kenton (3-0, AP 6A No. 5) (17 Bowl)--Hey, Emma Talley (and the rest of Caldwell County), don't go all craycray over the notion of the defending Class 2A champs slipping to 1-3 with a loss in this challenging road date. NewCath went 1-3 last year, too, and still won the state championship.

Murray (1-2, AP 2A No. 8) at Mayfield (3-0, AP A No. 1) (121 Bowl)--"Toothpick" reports at BluegrassPreps.com that 1997 was the last time the Tigers beat the Cardinals. It was in the Class A playoffs, and Murray returned the opening kick for a 7-0 lead that stood for the remainder of the game.

Anderson County (2-0, AP 5A No. 2) at Boyle County (3-0, AP 4A No. 2) (127 Bowl)--John Herndon writes in The Anderson News that Boyle County was the model when Mark Peach took over at Anderson County in 2004.

Garrard County (1-2, 3A) at Lincoln County (1-2, 5A) (27 Bowl)--Just because of this Facebook post by Stanford's fantastic WPBK: "Football on the radio tonight as Garrard County makes the short drive over to Bill Ed Leedy Field at Death Valley Stadium for the 29th meeting with the Lincoln County Patriots. Our coverage begins at 7:00 PM for the 7:30 kickoff. When taking into account the predecessors of these two teams, Lancaster and Stanford high schools, this may be the oldest football rivalry in Central Kentucky. School boys from the two counties have been meeting on the gridiron since at least 1900. That's over 113 years ago." In the long string of comments that ensued, WPBK said this photo is thought to be the 1916 Stanford High team:
