Let's make a comment here about Mayfield.  None of the State Champs had a harder row to hoe than the Cardinals.  In the quarter-finals, they had to play Lexington Christian, which MaxPreps had as the number 9 team in the whole Commonwealth, regardless of class.  Mayfield beat them 58-36.  Then they had to play Beechwood, who beat Mayfield in last year's state title game.  They beat Beechwood on a last-second field goal:  31-28.  And finally, they had to play an undefeated Owensboro Catholic team that had outscored its opponents by over 500 points.  The Cardinals beat them 53-48 in one of the greatest state title games ever played.  I know that Mayfield has an amazing history -- this was their 13th State Championship.  And I know that they have a lot of drama every year.  But to me, and especially given the recent history around the tornado, this was their greatest triumph in their long and great history.

It's the first time a Power Eleven Team has won a State Title since Mayfield won the 2A Title in 2015.  Since then, Mayfield had lost four times in the 2A Final:

That's a lot of heartache for a small town, before you even get to the tornado.  But as we like to say here on the Heath Post, Defeats Are Not Always Forever, and this year Mayfield is back on top.

Tilghman is trying to finish an undefeated regular season for the first time since 2003.  That year, they competed in the old AAA State Tournament.  They beat Logan County (53-7), Hopkins Co. Central (42-0), and Hopkinsville (28-21) before losing to Boyle County (35-21) in the State Semifinals.  The next week Boyle County beat Highlands 44-10 for the State Title.

This year, if the top seeds all win, the four semifinalists in the Class 4A Tournament will look like this:

Tilghman over Mayfield

We would be remiss to point out that Tilghman beat Mayfield in football, 35 to 28, in Paducah last Friday night.  It was Tilghman's first win against the Cardinals since 2005 and it was an excellent game from beginning to end.  Mayfield now leads the all-time series 52 to 48, with 10 ties.  (The last tie was in 1964).

The two most interesting results of the weekend -- besides Tilghman's huge win over McCracken County -- were:  (1) Lexington Christian beat Bowling Green 56 - 52 at the Rafferty's Bowl played on the campus of Western Kentucky U., and (2) Lex. Frederick Douglass, which outscored its opponents 611-70 last year in rolling to the 5A title, were crushed 45-6 in Canton, Ohio by Archbishop Hoban H.S. of Akron, Ohio.

This game was an incredible heartbreaker.  With 1:13 left in the game, and trailing 14-7, Mayfield scored a dramatic touchdown.  But the extra point was no good -- the ball hitting the upright and bouncing away.  That missed extra point was the difference in the 2A final.  Beechwood recovered Mayfield's onside kick and ran out the clock for its third straight title.

KHSAA Football Finals

This week the KHSAA will play its football championships at what I still think of as Commonwealth Stadium in Lexington.  Here are the finalists, along with some notes about teams from western Kentucky.  MaxPreps rankings are in parentheses:

Friday, December 2:

Class 1A:  (19) Pikeville (11-2) v. (28) Raceland (13-1), 11 A.M. Central

Crittenden County lost 24-12 in the quarter-finals in Louisville against Holy Cross (Louisville).

Class 2A:  (20) Beechwood (13-1) v. (23) Mayfield (14-0), 3 P.M. Central

Murray lost 49-14 at Mayfield in the Round of 16.

Class 4A:  (6) Corbin (14-0) v. (11) Boyle Co. (12-2), 7 P.M. Central

Madisonville lost 28-17 at Warren East in the Round of 16

Hopkinsville lost 21-7 at Logan Co. in the Round of 16

Saturday, December 3:

Class 3A:  (7) Christian Academy-Louisville (14-0) v. (16) Bardstown (14-0), 11 A.M. Central

Union Co. lost 66-33 at Bardstown in the quarter-finals.

Paducah Tilghman lost 30-24 at Christian Academy-Louisville in the quarter-finals.

Class 6A:  (4) Lou. Male (10-4) v. (9) Bullitt East (13-1), 3 P.M. Central

No western Kentucky interest here.  But for the record, (3) Trinity lost 10-7 at Bryan Station in the quarter-finals.  (2) St. X lost 22-21 at home in overtime to Male in the Round of 16.  (8) Lou. Ballard looked to have Male beaten in the semi-finals, but a late fumble gave Male a 24-20 victory.

Class 5A:  (1) Lex. Douglass (14-0) v. (5) Bowling Green (12-2), 7 P.M. Central

(17) Owensboro lost 14-2 at Douglass in the state semi-finals.
