Trigg County is considering a public pool! They had a meeting; there were folding chairs; people spoke at podiums; committees were construed, and the local radio station, WKDZ, was there to bring the noise. U! S! A! And the people, YES!

Real legislature gave public viewing to its school-safety bill, and mental health appears to be the politically viable rallying point around which at least some progress could be made. WPSD's Chris Yu has a good analysis of Senate Bill 1 and includes links to its summary and full text.

The governor, legislative leaders and 1,500 businessfolk from around the state got together in Lexington for the 24th-annual Kentucky Chamber Day Dinner, and it sounds like a pretty jovial time. "Kentucky Chamber President and CEO Dave Adkisson kicked off the event by highlighting infrastructure funding, legal liability reform, bail reform, sports wagering, fixing the state’s arbitration statute, tribunal reform, and tobacco-free schools as top priorities of the business community in 2019," Jacqueline Pitts wrote for the state chamber's blog.

So the Mayfield Cardinals on Friday beat the Williamsburg Yellow Jackets, 42-0, for the KHSAA Class A football championship. That makes 10 (!) state championships for Mayfield, and that's the fourth highest for any school in KHSAA football history. As noted by Mike Fields in the Lexington Herald-Leader, current Cardinals coach Joe Morris now has the same number of state championships (four) as his dad, former Cardinals coach Jack. Mayfield finished 14-1 this season.

The faculty adviser of UK's paper is a great friend and former College Heights Herald colleague, so I'm thrilled for him personally ... but it breaks my heart that WKU's long term as the banner toter for college journalism in Kentucky has been interrupted. Meanwhile, a Hilltopper is the new new Kentucky Press prez, so the Kernel better enjoy it while they can.

-- Calloway County at Heath--Reported Ryan Martin in The Tennesseean after Heath's 37-0 loss to Jo Byrns last week, "The Pirates, on the other hand, seemed unable to get things clicking at all. Running what some would call a gimmick offense, they ran the ball with little variation (and with little success) out of a modified shotgun all night."

-- Lawrence County at Sheldon Clark--Lawrence County has averaged a state-leading 65.7 points through three games.

-- Dayton at Newport. This is the second game for Dayton without its head coach, Zach Deaton, who is suspended.

-- Christian County at Hopkinsville

-- Muhlenberg County at Marshall County--Jody Norwood reported in The Tribune-Courier that, in last week's win over Russellville, the first victory for first-year head coach Ron Barnard, the Marshals gave up two touchdowns in the final four minutes to fall behind, 14-12, and then prevailed, 15-14, on a last-play-of-the-game field goal from a kicker who had missed five of six extra-point attempts on the season.
