So much basketball happening. Still spent from the Olympics. Hard to focus.

Meanwhile, things were pretty lively in and around Frankfort earlier today ...

Kentucky high-school football, Week 10

Lots of district-standings setters among this week's games ...

West Paducah Heath at Fort Campbell (No. 6 in the Associated Press poll for Class 3A)

Mayfield (unanimous AP A No. 1) at Russellville (AP A No. 7)--Game of the week? Winner wins Class A, District 1--and the likelihood of opening the playoffs with two straight home games.

Eminence at Frankfort (AP A No. 2)

Ashland Fairview (AP A No. 3) at Nicholas County (AP A No. 10)
--Game of the week? Winner probably wins Class A, District 7--and the likelihood of opening the playoffs with two straight home games.

Somerset (AP 2A No. 2) at Middlesboro
--Odd week for the home team.

Lexington Christian (AP 2A No. 6) at Danville (AP 2A No. 3)--Game of the week? Despite their rankings statewide, this game will determine the second- and third-place finishers in Class 2A, District 7. Both Lexington Christian and Danville are 1-1 in the district, with a loss each to Somerset.

Newport Central Catholic (AP 2A No. 4) 49 at Covington Holy Cross 10 on Thursday--NewCath rose this week from No. 7 in the Class 2A poll, and last night's win in a battle of the last two 2A state champs boosts the Thoroughbreds to 5-4 after a 1-3 start to the season.

Crittenden County at Caldwell County (AP 2A No. 5)--The home-standing Tigers soar in this week's poll from No. 10 after last Friday's win at Murray. Caldwell's only losses were 34-31 in Week 1 at home against Class 4A Calloway County and 38-37 at home on Sept. 7 against Trigg County (and that game was called with 5:42 to play because of lightning).

Murray (AP 2A No. 7) at Reidland--Healthy week for the home team.

Ashland Blazer (AP 4A No. 6) at Paintsville Johnson Central (AP 4A No. 8)--Game of the week? Winner wins Class 4A, District 8--and the likelihood of opening the playoffs with two straight home games.

Breckinridge County at Bowling Green Warren East (AP 4A No. 7)--The home-standing Raiders won again last Friday and are 8-0, but whoever voted for them two weeks ago for No. 1 in Class 4A did not vote for them this time.

Lone Oak (AP 4A No. 10) at Madisonville-North Hopkins

Nicholasville East Jessamine at Anderson County (AP 5A No. 10)--After losing 56-52 at Franklin County on a last-play-of-the-game kickoff return for a touchdown, the Bearcats seek to stave off a streak.

Lexington Paul Laurence Dunbar at Scott County (AP 6A No. 3)

Louisville Pleasure Ridge Park (AP 6A No. 4) at Louisville Southern--The visiting Panthers are 8-0 and this week received one vote for No. 1 in Class 6A--from the one person in the country who does not believe that Trinity is the best team in all of Kentucky, at least.

Oh, Kentucky

They're back on the course for the second and final round of the KHSAA boys' golf tournament at Bowling Green Country Club. Not all of them, though. Heath's Chad Behbehani and the other golfers who scored nine or more strokes over par in yesterday's first round were cut. As the 64th finisher in the 64-player-field First Region boys' tournament of 1986, let me say that I am very impressed with anyone who simply got himself to the state tournament. I hope you got to enjoy being out of school and visiting Bowling Green, and I hope you got to stay two nights in a hotel with good cable.

Great jobs news for Louisville?

McCracken County Education Association is reportedly no longer negotiating with the local teachers union.

There's the time the river caught on fire in Cleveland, and now there's the time the water plant caught on fire in Crofton.

Call this a comeback, too--Boy Lincoln is back in Hodgenville!

"The youngest touring comic hypnotist in the world."

No word yet on the condition of local Coke machines.

Less than three months until Christmas!
