Kentucky High-school Football, Second Round of Playoffs

I was up at the Madisonville Community College library yesterday, and I checked out a book called Kentucky Transportation. It came out in 1992, and I think it was published by the state transportation cabinet, but it has four of those official welcome-to-the-book letters with the signatures of important people--one each from the governor (Brereton C. Jones at the time), the transportation secretary (Don C. Kelly), UK's president (Charles T. Wethington Jr.) and the director of the Kentucky Transportation Center (Calvin G. Grayson). So this book is really, really an official deal. Its tagline, on the cover, is, in (almost) all capital letters:

A 200 YEAR CALENDAR OF HISTORY--1792 to 1992

TRACES, TRAILS and HIGHWAYS--RIVERS, RAILS and AIRWAYS

And its first sentence is, "Kentucky has always been a State of Transportation." That's not in all capital letters, but, even still, you know a book's going to be a big, official deal when it opens with a sentence like that one.

For this week's preview of the second round of the KHSAA-football playoffs, I'm just going to hurry up and type in all the games and post this, and then it seems like it will be fun to read at this book in context of thinking about all of these places and these games. I don't know. We'll see. Anyway, I'll just put whatever I learn from this book in the comments over today and the weekend.

And you thought all I did was sit around watching Trapper John, M.D. reruns.

Union County (9-2, No. 8) at Caldwell County (11-0, No. 1)--Way back on Aug. 31, the Union County Braves lost to the Caldwell County Tigers, 57-20, in the Kentucky National Guard Warrior Bowl in Marion. Since then, the Braves have won nine of 10--the only loss being 27-26 at Owensboro Catholic on Oct. 18. Last week, Union whipped Barlow Ballard Memorial by 42-7. Now they get what Michael Stinson in Henderson's Gleaner called "roughly the equivalent of a rematch with a grizzly bear." Union coach Steve Carter told Dan Schumerth with The Union County Advocate that his primary emphasis is eliminating a series of special-teams mistakes that plagued the Braves in the August game with the Tigers in Marion. Caldwell is the defending state runnerup for Class 2A, and the headline in Princeton's Times Leader on the game story after the first-round, 55-6 win over Hancock County read, "NEXT!" This is my fan-bus road trip of the week.

This Week's Games

This is the last week of the year to focus only on western Kentucky. Next week we will be down to the quarterfinals in each class. This week, I would love to be in Princeton for the game between Caldwell County and Union County, two old favorites of mine:

I would also note that once upon a time, many years ago, I went to Elizabethtown on a bus full of Heath Pirates for a game against E-Town. The Panthers had a quarterback named Bill Ransdell who was on his way to UK -- in fact, he was inducted into the 2011 class of the UK Athletics Hall of Fame -- and they were very good. Heath and E-Town played an outstanding game, but Ransdell was the difference, and the Panthers won a close game.

That was a long ride back home in the dark.

I hope that tonight, Coach Haskins and his merry men have more luck against what appears to be a really great team from Hardin County. I don't trust any Kentucky school that models its colors and logo on the University of North Carolina, but I also know how good teams from Hardin County can be.

Kentucky High-school Football, Week 8

Here are the games that most interest me among this weekend's Kentucky high-school football games.

McCracken County (5-2, No. 9 in this week's Associated Press poll for Class 6A) at Daviess County (4-3, 6A)--I'm starting to go all craycray for Class 6A. How the KHSAA playoff pairings are set up, only the Nos. 7 (Cecilia Central Hardin), 8 (Henderson County) and 9 (#Stampede) teams in this week's 6A poll will fall in the upper half of the bracket. Nos. 1-6 and 10 all have to deal with each other in the bottom half before the championship at L.T. Smith Stadium. Even if you extend out to the others receiving votes this week, you bring in only No. 11 (Louisville Butler) into the upper half. So, anyway, Orville J has the 'Stangs on a five-game roll. This will be a very tough game tonight in Owensboro (Daviess beat previously unbeaten Bowling Green South Warren a couple of weeks ago), and then we go home for an even tougher matchup next week with Henderson County (eighth-ranked Hens whipped Daviess last week, 41-12). But, whatever, we're in the playoffs (there are only four teams in District 1, and four get in), and we appear to be improving. The West Kentucky Star raves McCracken County is "i n the midst of an incredible inaugural season." Haters gonna hate, but I don't care--I'm officially fired up. Go, McCHS!

Louisville Trinity (4-3, 6A No. 1) at Louisville Male (7-0, 6A No. 3) --The city game is my fan-bus road trip of Week 8. District 4 includes four teams--the Trinity Shamrocks, the Male Bulldogs, the Saint Xavier Tigers and the duPont Manual Crimsons--and those teams are ranked Nos. 1, 3, 5 and 6, respectively, in this week's Class 6A poll for the state. So far this season, Trinity has beaten St. X, 29-17, on Oct. 4 and Manual, 38-30, on Oct. 11. Male has beaten St. X, 44-40, on Oct. 4, and the Bulldogs and Crimsons play Oct. 25.
