Kentucky high-school football, semifinals

The Internet was already awesome, and the Kentuckiana Digital Library has made it even a little more awesome still. Up there's a picture of the 1945 football team at Garth High School in Georgetown. That school, opened in 1926, folded into Georgetown High in 1958, and then Georgetown High consolidated into Scott County High in 1975.

Scott County is one of 24 Kentucky high schools still playing football this weekend. The rest of the pictures in this post don't have much to do with football if anything, but, whatever, they're from the Kentucky Digital Library, which I lost about two hours Tuesday afternoon happily browsing. Plus, Go Heath already talked about the football.

Class A

Mayfield at Fort Mitchell Beechwood--Mayfield's WYMC, which will be covering the Cardinals' 6:30 p.m. Central kickoff in northern Kentucky, on Wednesday spun the Danny Davis and the Nashville Brass sendup of "Wabash Cannonball." And that led to my happy discovery that there was a 1977 Danny Davis and the Nashville Brass TV special. Here's a postcard of Mayfield High that the Kentuckiana Digitial Library has.

Hazard at Westwood Fairview--Defending state champs visit the Class A final four's gate-crasher. How Hazard made it to this round should've been on Sportscenter this week.

Caldwell County vs. Louisville DeSales at Louisville Fairdale High School--All clear for the Tigers' buses across U.S. 62 and U.S. 31W from Princeton up to the 'ville.

Newport Central Catholic at Somerset--Since 2000, NewCath is 7-0 in state semifinals. Whether they extend that streak or the Briar Jumpers break it, this Holiday Inn looks like a fine place to either celebrate or mourn. On U.S. 27 South, the hotel offers "Color T.V. all rooms - Swimming Pool, Coffee Shop & Dining Room, Meeting rooms for 200 people, 5 Miles from beautiful Lake Cumberland, 35 Miles from Cumberland Falls."

Bourbon County at Belfry--Seventy-five years ago, they were laying the foundation for Belfry School and "Pond Creek Nation" in Pike County. This picture was snapped Nov. 18, 1937.

Bowling Green at Elizabethtown John Hardin--For the home team, no less than "the biggest night in the history of the program," writes Chuck Jones in The News-Enterprise.

Scott County at Louisville Trinity

-- second round of playoffs and western Kentucky results

-- quarterfinals and Go Heath's update

  1. Defending state champs, for the record: Hazard in Class A, Central in 3A, Highlands in 4A, Bowling Green in 5A and Trinity in 6A. Covington Holy Cross won the 2011 2A crown, but 2010 champ NewCath eliminated the Indians a couple of weeks ago.

Also, Heath won the 1986 Class A state championship.

    Class A:

    -- Mayfield 7 at Beechwood 7
    -- Hazard 0 at Fairview 14

    Class 2A:

    -- NewCath 7 at Somerset 6
    -- Caldwell County 14 at DeSales 14

    -- Monroe County 7 at Central 6
    -- Bourbon County 0 at Belfry 7

    -- Warren East 0 at Collins 10

-- Bowling Green 6 at John Hardin 7
    -- Cooper 0 at Harlan County 7

    -- Eastern 14 at PRP 7
    -- Scott County 0 at Trinity 0

    1. Games pretty much all around halftime ... at it, just after it or just before it ...

Class A: Mayfield ties Beechwood at 14 on 14-yard run by Jonathan Jackson. "If he can't play at UK, who can?" WYMC asks. ... Defending-champ Hazard in big trouble at Fairview, trailing 26-6.

2A: Caldwell County is winning, 30-14, at DeSales, and NewCath has retaken the lead, 13-12, at Somerset.

3A: Defending-champ Central trails, 13-6, to visiting Monroe County, and unbeaten Bourbon County is down, 14-7, at Belfry.

4A: Warren East is getting rocked in Shelbyville--Collins is up, 24-0. Defending-champ Highlands is, indeed, rolling: 35-14 over visiting LexCath.

5A: Defending-champ Bowling Green is behind, 13-6, at John Hardin, and Harlan County and visiting Cooper are tied at 7.

6A: Scott County leads at defending-champ Trinity, 7-0, and PRP has surged from behind to lead Eastern, 35-14.

So, of the five active defending champs, four trail near halftime of their games.

  6. In 6A, Scott County has increased its lead at Trinity to 14-0.

In 5A, Cooper has come from behind to lead at Harlan County, 14-7.

In 3A, Central has closed to within 13-12 against visiting Monroe County.

In A, Mayfield has taken its first lead at Beechwood, 21-14.

  7. In 2A, DeSales has closed to within 30-21 of visiting Caldwell County.

In A, Mayfield increases its lead to, 28-14, at Beechwood. And now WYMC gives its first score update on the Fairview-Hazard game, the semifinal on the other side of the A bracket.

  8. Now getting on to fourth quarters, A-champ Hazard is being blasted at Fairview; 3A-champ Central trails by one vs. Monroe County; 5A-champ Bowling Green is down seven at John Hardin, and 6A-champ Trinity is behind, 14-0, against Scott County.

  9. 6A: 7:49 to play at Trinity, and the Rocks close to within 14-7 of Scott County.

  10. 2A: Caldwell County stall DeSales at the 1, and the Colts settle for a field goal to pull within 30-4 with 9:50 to go.

  11. A: Mayfield, which took advantage of a poor end-of-the-first-half punt to tie the game at 14, now leads 35-14 at Beechwood.

  12. 2A: NewCath has won at Somerset, 27-18.

  13. 3A: Central has come from behind to turn back visiting Monroe County, 18-13.

  14. 6A: 6:03 to go, and Scott County is forced to punt. Trinity, trailing 14-7, takes over at the Cardinals' 47.

  15. 5A: With 1:36 to play, per Twitter, Bowling Green runs a hook-and-ladder for a 75-yard touchdown and then converts a two-point conversion to take a 14-13 lead at John Hardin.

  16. A: Mayfield wins, 35-14, at Beechwood.

  17. 6A: 3:57, and Trinity has tied Scott County at 14.

  18. 2A: Caldwell County gets "a long TD," per Scott Brown of WKDZ, and now leads, 36-24, with less than 10 minutes to play at DeSales.

  19. 5A: Bowling Green stops John Hardin on downs in Purples territory, and the 2011 champ is headed home to defend its crown. Final: 14-13.

    1. Purples ...

  20. 2A: DeSales storms back. A short touchdown run reduces Caldwell County's lead to 36-31 with seven minutes to go.

  21. A: Fairview, 40-9 final over Hazard. Class A will have a new champ.

  22. 4A: Collins finishes off Warren East, 58-7.

  23. 5A: Cooper, 17-7 winner at Harlan County.

  24. 6A: @trinitysports Tweets that Scott County will punt with 1:07 to play. Still tied at 14 in Saint Matthews.

  29. And, so, Central in 3A, Bowling Green in 5A and Trinity in 6A each muster fourth-quarter comebacks to keep alive their state-championship defenses.

  30. Meanwhile, the HP Twitter desk, has been sanctioned: "You are over the daily limit for sending Tweets. Please wait a few hours and try again."

  31. 2A: Todd Griffin with Princeton's Times-Leader that Caldwell County has scored a touchdown with about a minute to play at DeSales and that the trailing Colts have no more timeouts.

  33. 3A ...

The Glasgow Daily Times Facebook feed documents the onset of heartbreak in Tompkinsville last night, as Monroe County's upset bid of defending-champ Louisville Central fell apart. At the half, the Falcons led, 13-6, having a late opportunity to extend their lead snuffed by an interception. At the start of the fourth quarter, Monroe County still led, 13-12.

Trivia time: When was the last time Monroe County advanced to a football state title game?

The ensuing conversation from this post turns into a mostly happy back and forth of 22 replies from all seemingly Falcon-friendly followers. "They won the region or made it to region in 89 bc coach petett used to talk about being quarterback in that game. Lol," says one. "They use to suck at every game weather basketball, football, whatever." says another.

"Never" is the answer to the original question. "They reached the semi-state finals in two consecutive years, 2008 and 2009, but lost to Fort Campbell," the newspaper elaborates. "Fort Campbell won the Class 2A title those two years."

Then the conversation turns into a celebration of the members of the current crops of Falcons. "Monroe has a great coach as well as a great bunch of hard working boys that deserve the great season they have had," says one GDT reader.

But, by now, up in Louisville, the defending champs have edged ahead of the Falcons.

"Central scores to go ahead 18-13. Monroe stopped two-point conversion attempt with more than 8 minutes to play in the game."

There's a reply to that post in which one of the Monroe County fans wishes for a comeback.

    And, then, ...

"The Falcons face fourth-and-8 with less that five minutes to play in the game. The game is in a time out. Central still leads 18-13. The ball is at the Central 37."

    This post gets one "Like."

    And, then, ...

"Monroe turns the ball over on downs with an incomplete pass."

GDT readers go quiet over this post.

    Finally, ...

"Central has run out the clock to win the Class 3A semi-state game in Louisville, 18-13. They were able to run out the clock and end Monroe County's outstanding season."

And that post receives four "Likes," including one from a person who lives in Louisville.

    1. Three things about that episode:

-- One, it would be great if unaffiliated somebody who really knows--Jack Haskins? Kevin Stewart? Pat Gates?--could talk about where Mayfield's Jonathan Jackson ranks against some of western Kentucky's all-time players.

-- Two, Elijah Sindelar's 70-yard touchdown pass that bumped Caldwell County's lead to 36-24 late was just fantastic.

      -- Three, I love Caldwell's royal-blue-and-goal uniforms vs. the brown-and-white of DeSales.
