Apologies to William and Doug, but I'll be flipping over to Channel 3 after Rhoda and Phyllis on Channel 12.

1975: What Was On TV Last Night?

Monday night after the Jerry Lewis telethon, we got to see Dolphins-Vikings on Channel 3. And, as you can see, even though it was just a preseason game, the rematch of Super Bowl VIII(!) was given significant play in The Miami News the following morning. It made 1A of the Minneapolis Tribune, too--though not with the above-the-fold, bigger-than-the-masthead alarm visible in passing by newsstands or vending boxes.

As previously reported, 6-year-old I raged and sobbed when the Dolphins' 1974 season ended in that horrible "Sea of Hands" game against the Raiders. By the time this preseason game turned up on NFL Monday Night Football nine months later, though, I was 7. I'd gone through Csonka, Kiick and Warfield (finally) actually leaving for the WFL, and a (probably necessary) stoicism had set in around my relationship to the Dolphins.

Also if I wasn't already girlcrazy by Monday, Sept. 2, 1975, I was right on the precipice of it. Because at the first chili supper of the 1975-76 school year at Concord Elementary, when some sixth-graders did a lip-sync performance of "Saturday Night" by the Bay City Rollers, I was totally dazzled by at least two of the girls in my second-grade class. And I think that must've happened not long after the Bay City Rollers made their U.S. debut on Saturday Night Live with Howard Cosell, which was Oct. 4.

So somewhere between Dec. 21, 1974, when the Dolphins lost to the Raiders, and a Monday night not long after Oct. 4, 1975, is when I tipped into being more interested in the girls than the Dolphins. Now, as to trying to more precisely pinpoint this change, I noted a little braincell of decades-old innocent sadness when I scrolled upon the following story today inside the Sept. 2, 1975, Miami News.

It was a sense of genuine discovery this morning, as though I felt at the time this was really bad news (and I would've been right; neither Anderson nor Buoniconti played in NFL75) and hadn't revisited the original feeling since. The intensity of that memory might indicate that my girlcraziness hadn't quite claimed dominance in my heart by the time of Monday Night Football game. But there's no way it hadn't taken hold by the Bay City Rollers thing a month later. And while I never quit loving the Dolphins after that, I never again cared about them as much as I cared about the girls.

For pretty much my whole life I've thought it was kind of cruel that the amazing Dolphins turned me on at such a young age, only to never achieve that same success since. But as I type this morning, I see grace and blessing in the timing--the Dolphins were at their best when I was least encumbered in enjoying their success, and whatever disappointments I experienced with them in the years since never consumed me.

In fact, the last moment that the Dolphins actually seemed like they might win another Super Bowl--in the third quarter of the Dec. 21 Dolphins-Vikings game in Week 16 of NFL02--is literally when my eventual wife and I started dating. The 2002 Dolphins were fantastic until the fourth quarter of that game. Then I left Matthew's before the game was over to go see her, and then we decided that day that we would be a thing, and then the Dolphins lost to the Vikings and didn't even make the playoffs, and now we are still a thing.

I've got more girl stuff going in my life than ever now--the wife and since a daughter, a female cat and a female dog. Happily, totally girlcrazy, still. I'm excited about the 2022 Dolphins; I think they might end up being pretty good. Heck, I'm excited about the 1975 Dolphins, and I know they end up being not super. Mostly, though, I'm just trying to be breathy Patti York at the 1975 Jerry Lewis telethon--"so strong and bold as life unfolds its mystery to me."

1975: What's On TV Tonight (And The Next 21.5 Hours)?

There's a boatload of stuff from Jerry Lewis's 1975 MDA telethon on YouTube. But I know you're busy, so just could just check out the next 15 minutes or so after this video starts ...

This was Frank Sinatra's first appearance in Jerry Lewis's 10 (so far) telethons. I really like his rich-guy moves in the breaks between the songs, and I really like his pingponging between covers of recent hits by other people (like "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown") and standards for which his are regarded as the definitive performances (like "They Can't Take That Away From Me"). He sure was good, wasn't he?

None of these songs appears to be available as a standalone video on YouTube. If they were out there, they would've each made this list. But, whatever, here are my 10 favorite songs otherwise from those most-of-two days over Labor Day weekend:

Jerry Lewis was from Newark, New Jersey. I think I might be the only person in the world who was a fan of the Newark airport before its modernizations of the last five or six years.

The Diane Linkletter story makes me so sad, and The Diane Linkletter Story makes me so mad. Maybe because the Alex Jones garbage has been so much in the news the last couple of days, I thought of the John Waters satire when I saw this note that Art Linkletter was going to be on with Tom Snyder late tonight in 1975.

I didn't find a clip of Linkletter's Tomorrow Show appearance, but we can imagine what he said. He made the rounds. (... His hair has gone grey/He passes every day/They say he walks the length of the city ...)

Whatever exactly happened when with Diane Linkletter, it's a tragedy. I do know one thing: We could sure learn to be more gentle with each other in this world.

After this 15-minute program on the Congressional Baseball Game (going into 1975, the Republicans have won 12 of 13 since the game was resurrected in 1962) at 7 p.m., Curt Gowdy and Joe Garagiola are scheduled to have coverage from Baltimore of Orioles-A’s on Monday Night Baseball.

1975: Acts I of II

San Diego Chargers kicker Ray Wersching is one of the contestant on Channel 6's episode of High Rollers this morning.

Dude never made more than 50 percent of his field-goal attempts in four seasons in San Diego, but he ended up catching on with the 49ers and kicking for their first-two Super Bowl winners in the 1980s.

That's quite a second act of a career--but nothing like that of the host of High Rollers.

You've probably been wondering what happened with my 1975 reports. Well, I decided to rethink things.

First, I've realized that it's unsatisfying to experience concurrent football and Christmas seasons. Also, I decided it's more important for my days of week to align than it is for my dates. And I also will note that I am considering at least one more trip back through 1975 (which would be my third at the HP) before turning the calendar to 1976 because 1975 was such a giant year for real me--first year I collected baseball, football and basketball cards; first year I really understood how the TV networks worked, first year in the Concord district, etc.

So, anyway, I might yet switch things up some more, but, for now, today for fake me is Tuesday, May 20, 1975, and the Channel 6 news just went off, and here's Johnny ...

British Open and NBA Finals (2021) and MLB All-Star Game (1975)

Louis Oosthuizen at some point leads every major golf tournament, and he is leading the British Open now--after an opening-round 64. Brian Harman and Jordan Spieth, also done for the day, are both a stroke back at 5-under.

The Milwaukee Bucks beat the Phoenix Suns last night, to even the NBA Finals at two games apiece. The home team has won each of the four games so far. Game 5 is in Phoenix, at 7 Central Saturday.

Sometimes I really enjoy watching sports without a rooting interest. I will be happy to see either the Bucks (for Greg Smith) or Suns (for Kyle Macy) win the NBA championship, and I thought last night's game was just fantastic. And now I'm enjoying the golf today. Here's Justin Thomas (even through 10) teeing off, and I'd be fine with Louisville Justin, anxious Spieth, farmer Oosthuizen ... most any of them winning. I don't care really. It's just fun to crank up the air conditioning, watch these guys in the wind and imagine myself being somewhere pretty and not 200 degrees.

But as for the 1975 Major League Baseball All-Star Game (on Channel 6 at 7 today, Tuesday, July 15), though I will be excited to see Gary Carter, Randy Jones and Bob Watson in their exotic Expos, Padres and Astros uniforms, I am firmly in the camp of the American Leaguers. Vida Blue is breathtaking in all gold.

It was used to illustrate a little story on Page 1 about candy sales being down in the United States or something like that. I just think it's fun to think about candy and candy machines from 1975, and I thought you might find it fun, too.

At the time, I'd've probably gone for the Baby Ruth or the Planters, but 2021 me really hopes 1975 me invests his 15 cents in a Bun, because I hadn't thought about a Bun in years!

As you all probably recall, I performed a well-received lip-sync sendup of "Philadelphia Freedom" during a third-grade talent show at Paducah's Concord Elementary School in the autumn of 1976. Here was Elton John performing it on today (Saturday, May 17) 1975's episode of Soul Train ...

I've spent a fair amount of time in Philadelphia, and I was a big fan of the Bicentennial. And I think I have specifically experienced a close version of what Bernie Taupin was thinking about when he wrote about how "the whippoorwill of freedom zapped me right between the eyes."

I can draw a direct line of sight from that lonely experience--on a bicycle on a Sunday morning in an alley in Cary, North Carolina--to a very happy and non-lonely experience in Morganton, North Carolina, a few years later. Now here's a song that Johnny Bristol wrote about Morganton ...

Johnny Bristol, a breakout star for me of 2020, was on American Bandstand today in 1975 ...

My youngest sibling, who is older than me, really loved Elton John. He preferred American Bandstand to Soul Train. I hope, though, he wasn't too busy watching Johnny Bristol and instead got to see Elton John do this excellent performance on this Saturday, because I know Kurt really, really loved "Bennie and the Jets" at least at the time ...

In conclusion: Wow ... TV! And: Internet!
