Before we all settle in to watch Boston Bruins-vs.-New York Rangers game-of-the-week NHL Action on Channel 6 at 3 this Sunday afternoon, March 23, 1975, let us bask in the afterglow of UK's big win over IU as captured in the pages of Lexington's Herald-Leader ...

Also, the Sunday Herald-Leader has the Parade insert, which this week includes the fun of its boys' high-school all-American team ...

Wizards!

Washington 103, Miami 100 ... Wizards, which had lost two in a row, break Heat's four-game win streak with come-from-at-least-13-behind to win at the Cap Centre in Landover (or thereabouts) ... now back to tied at second in the Eastern Conference with Chicago (my second-favorite NBA team) at 11-5, behind 12-5 Brooklyn ...

Wizards coach Wes Unseld Jr. was born Sept. 20, 1975, in Catonsville, Maryland. Wes Unseld Sr. had a lot on his plate in 1975.

It was used to illustrate a little story on Page 1 about candy sales being down in the United States or something like that. I just think it's fun to think about candy and candy machines from 1975, and I thought you might find it fun, too. 

At the time, I'd've probably gone for the Baby Ruth or the Planters, but 2021 me really hopes 1975 me invests his 15 cents in a Bun, because I hadn't thought about a Bun in years!

1975: Turning to sports, ...

The May 12, 1975, Sports Illustrated has the Kentucky Derby on its cover, but my favorite Kentucky item in the issue is this "Faces In The Crowd" entry:

"Scott Beard, 13, an eighth-grader at Westport High in Louisville, became the youngest person to win a major high school golf tournament in Kentucky, with a two-over-par 74 in the Kentucky Invitational at Seneca Golf Course. Scott started playing five years ago."

Scott Beard is not, however, going to win the KHSAA boys' golf championship. The 1975 state title will instead go to Russ Cochran of Paducah Saint Mary's. Scott Beard, the son of UK basketball legend Ralph Beard, will eventually get his KHSAA crown--in 1979, one year after Lone Oak's Kenny Perry gets his. By that point, Scott Beard will no longer be a Louisville Westport Warhawk. He instead will be leading Louisville Trinity to the team championship. Westport, in fact, won't even be a high school after 1981.

Also from this issue:

-- The Washington Bullets lead the Boston Celtics, two games to one, in the NBA Eastern Conference finals. The Chicago Bulls lead the Golden State Warriors, two games to one, in the West.

-- The Kentucky Colonels and Indiana Pacers are headed to the ABA finals.

-- Sonny Jurgensen retired.

-- A Nashville, Tenn., company is advertising some hip new fashions on Page 10.
