The Freakin' Weekend (1974)
Current World Football League standings as of Thursday, July 11, 1974:

The league kicked off last night with 10 games, and tonight we have the first nationally televised contest, the New York Stars at the Jacksonville Sharks, syndicated by TVS (check your local listings).
I actually hate the WFL. It's going to have a big hand in killing the Dolphins. But by this point in the summer, 1974 me is willing to watch whatever football you're willing to give me. We'll see how much interest I have left in the WFL in a couple of weeks.
MLB74 is going on ...
The big sports news of late, though, has been Wimbledon. Lovers Jimmy Connors and Chris Evert won the men's and women's singles titles, and they are on the covers of both the current SPORT and Sports Illustrated magazines. SI has the couple posing with their trophies. Monthly SPORT, of course, had to go to press before the tournament was played, so its cover shot of Connors and Evert leaping the net together is especially impressive. Newsweek also had tennis on a cover earlier this month, but it guessed wrong and went with Sweden's Björn Borg.
I like playing tennis. 2020 me, in fact, played just this past Thursday, July 9 (and won my best-of-three-sets match at the Madisonville Community College Garnett "Penny" Pennington courts, 6-2 and 6-3). I just have never much been able to get into it as a spectator sport, however. I didn't even read the SI coverage and was actually more interested in some of the ads.

What's (Not) On TV Tonight (1973)?
The Indianapolis 500, that's what:
I'm not sure what Channel 3 is going to show now that the race is delayed, but the great news is this frees up my Memorial Day May 28, 1973, Monday evening to watch baseball on Channel 6. In some markets at least, that game is scheduled to be the Oakland A's at the Detroit Tigers.
And if that doesn't happen--the A's-Tigers game was rained out Sunday--I will settle for the Channel 12 sitcom reruns. Per the Paducah, Kentucky, Sun-Democrat, here's what we can look forward to at 8 and 8:30 Central:
Here's Lucy. Lucy lands the job when singer Petula Clark contacts the agency for a secretary who can also act as her companion.
The Doris Day Show. Doris spends so much time interviewing a rock music star that word spreads that the young singer and Doris are seriously involved.
I actually saw both of these episodes when they originally ran during the fake 1972/73 TV season that I've been enjoying, and I would be happy to watch them both again.

What's On TV This Afternoon (At 5 On Channel 12 In 1973)?
I don't know where, but somewhere (not here) I previously reported that To Tell the Truth is not a good game show--that it's a great game show. And I totally had that right.

MLB Update
Here is the latest Top 10 from the CBS Power Rankings:
1. Detroit Tigers: 66-45
2. Atlanta Braves: 69-45
3. Tampa Bay Devil Rays: 66-46
4. Boston Red Sox: 69-46
5. Pittsburgh Pirates: 68-44
6. Los Angeles Dodgers: 62-50
7. St. Louis Cardinals: 66-46
8. Cleveland Indians: 62-51
9. Texas Rangers: 64-50
10. Oakland Athletics: 64-49
A few notes of interest:
-- In their last 40 games, the Dodgers have gone 32-8. Earvin Johnson may really have magical powers.
-- Boston has already won as many games as they did last year.
-- Pittsburgh -- which hasn't had a winning record since 1992 -- would have to go 13-37 the rest of the way not to have a winning record this year.
-- The Yankees are ranked 16th.
-- Natstown is ranked 17th.
-- The Giants -- who used all of their players in the playoffs last year, and won the World Series -- are 26th. But, as I just said, at least Giants fans have a World Series Championship to remember.
