Oh, Kentucky

Hiring at the pen (starting at $14.25 per hour). Seeking someone with "a sincere passion for Henderson and our region."

Locals take over Owensboro's Towne Square Mall. Paducah downtown is amid a makeover (including a possible influx of Louisville investment). I love malls and downtowns, as well as Paducah and Owensboro, so this is all great news by my score.

Lexingtonwise, Sav's No. 2 has opened downtown; Drake's No. 14, in Hamburg.

Garbage goes private in Liberty.

Christmas parades: Sharpsburg, Nov. 9; Owensboro, Nov. 23; Central City, Nov. 24; Lebanon and Louisville, Nov. 29;  Greensburg, Guthrie and Pikeville, Nov. 30; Boyce, Dawson Springs, Murray, Salem and Sebree, Dec. 1; Bardstown, Dec. 5; Clay, Fredonia, Harrodsburg, Hopkinsville, Irvine/Ravenna, London, Maysville, Monticello, Pineville, Richmond, Smiths Grove, Stanton and Trenton, Dec. 6; Arlington, Barbourville, Beattyville, Berea, Bloomfield, Bowling Green,  romley/Ludlow, Brownsville, Cadiz, Calvert City, Carlisle, Clinton, Columbia, Corbin, Cynthiana, Danville, Frankfort, Glasgow, Grayson, Greenville, Hawesville, Henderson, Horse Cave, Inez, Lawrenceburg, Leitchfield, Lexington, Madisonville, Marion, Middlesboro, Morgantown, Munfordville, Murray, Owingsville, Paducah, Rabbit Hash, Raceland, Russell Springs, Salyersville, Scottsville, Shelbyville, Somerset, Trenton, Versailles, Whitley City and Winchester, Dec. 7; Auburn, Georgetown and New Haven, Dec. 8; Augusta, Burkesville, Burnside, Campbellsville, Cave City, Elkton, Franklin, Louisa, Mayfield, Providence, Williamsburg and Woodburn, Dec. 14, and Tollesboro, Dec. 15.

Oh, Kentucky

If you want to get your week off to a depressing start, check out Thomas Capps's (excellent) report for Channel 6 on the runaround that sick former Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant workers are getting from the U.S. Department of Labor and its Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program.

For the moment, at least, what is said to be Kentucky's oldest continuously running fair is no more.

Bad jobs news from Elizabethtown and Raceland. Good from Leitchfield. Hiring in Hardin (I love The Brass Lantern).

I've talked before about the fantastic meeting coverage in today's journalism. Well, I'm not sure that anyone does it consistently any better than Michael Monks in The River City News. His blow-by-blow from a Bromley city-council meeting reads like a freaking Dragnet:

"Effectively at 6:45 tonight, Ludlow is going to make the next fire run?," Chief Keller asked.

"As soon as I call them," Mayor Denham said. "I'll call them shortly when I get done with this."

"OK," the chief said, with a laugh.

Just fantastic.

Spring break is over at Kentucky's public schools, and The Courier-Journal has the 411 to bring your tan-and-fine self back up to Louisville-and-environs speed.

Bowling Green's Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science has selected the high-school sophomores who would make up its Class of 2021, and they hail from 54 of Kentucky's counties. Over its 11 years, Gatton has invited students from all but three Kentucky counties.

Groundbreaking is set for tomorrow for the Henderson County Public Library expansion ("light refreshments"!).

What's next for 112 W. Broadway in Mayfield?

Kentucky High-school Football, #allthewaytostate

Organizing in Louisville ...

Gathering in Belfry ...

Feeling it in Fort Mitchell ...

Roadtripping from Bowling Green ...

Setting in Pikeville ...

Warming up in Raceland ...

It's a packed house in Brandenburg, where Meade County is hosting Trinity ...

There are plenty of seats available at Louisville Southern, which was hosting the DeSales "home" game ...

SRO in Belfry ...

And, from the visitors' side, a spellcheck ...

Coin flip in Elizabethtown ...

Kickoff in Goshen ...

This one turned out to be the game of the night ...

It was tied at halftime ...

Early in the third quarter, however, the visiting Red Devils surged ahead ...

Meanwhile, in Fort Mitchell, ...

And Brandenburg ...

And Fort Thomas ...

Back in Goshen, ...

And with six seconds to go, the home team appears to wrap it up ...

Owensboro will get one last chance ...

The quarterback rolls out ...

... pass is tipped ... and ... HE'S GOT IT! ...

... HE! ... COULD! ... GO! ... ALL! ... THE! ... WAY! ...

OMG!

Kentucky High-school Football, State Semifinals

Next weekend, all roads lead to Bowling Green, but tonight we have 13 routes of team and fan buses, cars too-packed with students and minivans of parents, neighbors and extended family in for Thanksgiving weekend, streaming (roughly eastward) across the state to see semifinals in the state playoffs. For all of them and everyone else on the roads and not on the roads, in Kentucky and not in Kentucky, we pray that "the Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time on and forevermore."

Kentucky High-school Football, Class A Round of Eight

The closest margin of victory through the first two rounds of the Class A tournament has been 16 points, but things might get a bit more competitive starting Friday. The eight teams still alive were all ranked in the final BluegrassPreps.com top nine for Class A, and they are a combined 82-14 on the season.

Then again, we might not see closer games Friday. Seven of these same teams advanced to this same stage last season, and no 2013 regional final was tighter than an 11-point decision. Last year's four winners were Mayfield, Frankfort, Williamsburg and Raceland, and the Cardinals came out of Region 1 to win the state title.

There are two regular-season rematches are among Friday's games:

-- Mayfield won at Russellville, 16-8, on Oct. 24.

-- Raceland won at home against Paintsville, 32-0, on Oct. 24.

Kentucky High-school Football, Class A Round of 16

Mayfield, Russellville, Frankfort, Fort Mitchell Beechwood, Williamsburg, Hazard, Raceland and Pikeville (from top to bottom of the bracket) have played like the eight best teams in Class A all season, and I will be surprised if those teams aren't the last eight standing after Friday's games.

Kentucky High-school Football, Class A Round of 32

Class A might turn out to be the most competitive bracket of the six Kentucky High School Athletic Association football playoffs, but it would be a surprise if tonight's games much challenge the top-ranked teams. I expect the top eight teams in the final BluegrassPreps.com rankings to be the last eight teams to be playing in this bracket: No. 1 Mayfield (the defending state champ) and No. 7 Russellville in Region 1, No. 2 Fort Mitchell Beechwood and No. 5 Frankfort in Region 2, No. 4 Williamsburg and No. 8 Hazard in Region 3 and No. 3 Pikeville and No. 6 Raceland in Region 4.

Kentucky High-school Football, More Week 3

It was an awful Friday in Mayfield.

In Louisville, the Manual Crimsons headed out U.S. 60 and whipped Pleasure Ridge Park, 43-0. Dave Cantrall's statewide ratings for the Lexington Herald-Leader.

Montgomery County High in Mount Sterling hosted George Rogers Clark from Winchester, but the home team lost, 31-21.

McLean County High in Calhoun hosted Muhlenberg County from Greenville, and the home team won, 21-12.

Back in Louisville, our old friends from Fern Creek endured the stoplights on Bardstown Road and previously unbeaten Seneca, 30-20.

Greenup County had some pre-game festivities honoring its junior-football leaguers, but Raceland was all business, winning, 25-0.

The coin toss was competitive, but then the purple Tigers of Bardstown romped the red-and-white Cardinals at Nelson County High, 46-19.

The Pulaski County Maroons are getting excited about taking another try at the Class 5A state championship. Pulaski is 3-0 after a 41-6 win at Russell County. Last season, the Maroons were 14-0 before losing in the state final, 41-14, to and in (but not exactly at) Bowling Green. Good for both the Maroons and the Purples that they've scheduled each other for an Oct. 31 regular-season game in Somerset.

Of course, they're pretty excited in Caldwell County, too. The Tigers are 4-0 and have scored 78, 62, 72 and 50 points in their games so far.

At this point, the home folk were pretty excited at Murray's Ty Holland Stadium, but Mayfield came back to win, 21-10.

I think the home folk in Corbin were getting a little carried away with themselves here. The Redhounds held off late-charging Danville, 28-20.

The home folk in Owensboro had to fight getting ahead of themselves here, as the Red Devils took a 13-point lead on visiting Bowling Green midway through the third quarter.

I know nothing about this rivalry, but the schools are about 15 minutes apart. I'll bet Russell, 29-27, at Ashland Blazer in overtime got more than a few people excited out in that part of the state.

Caldwell hoisted what appears to be the 139 Bowl trophy. This is the second year of the 139 Bowl, and the party started early this year.

Apparently, the live-blogging jinx applies to Twitter, too.

Damien Harris continues to get everybody excited. His 5A Madison Southern Eagles of Berea beat the previously unbeaten, 6A Bulldogs at Lexington Paul Laurence Dunbar, 49-35.

The Warren Central Dragons of Bowling Green were so excited after beating North Hardin, 32-14, in Radcliff that they just had to sing.

Final on Frederica Street: BG 42 at Owensboro 34.

Hey, Paducah Tilghman won! Blue Tornado 36, Graves County 22. (Maybe the Eagles' bus at least stopped at Taco John's on the way out of town.)
