Kentucky High-school Football, Class A Round of 32

Class A might turn out to be the most competitive bracket of the six Kentucky High School Athletic Association football playoffs, but it would be a surprise if tonight's games much challenge the top-ranked teams. I expect the top eight teams in the final BluegrassPreps.com rankings to be the last eight teams to be playing in this bracket: No. 1 Mayfield (the defending state champ) and No. 7 Russellville in Region 1, No. 2 Fort Mitchell Beechwood and No. 5 Frankfort in Region 2, No. 4 Williamsburg and No. 8 Hazard in Region 3 and No. 3 Pikeville and No. 6 Raceland in Region 4.

  1. By the way, I am totally rooting for the home team in Ludlow (6-4) at Paris (8-2) in Region 2 tonight.

  2. Mayfield's AM 1430 WYMC is so unconcerned about today's games that earlier today they were eschewing the Motown originals they would typically play in favor of some Michael McDonald slow-jam sendups. And now they're doing "To Sir With Love" by Lulu.

  3. If we were back in the era of journalism abundance--with its Sunday magazines, loose expense reporting and state bureaus--the Kentucky desk tonight would be sending a writer and a photog each out to the Manual game at McCracken County, the Madison Southern game at Letcher County, the Allen County-Scottsville game at Madisonville-North Hopkins, the Mason County game at Estill County, the Somerset game at Shelby Valley and the Ludlow game at Paris. We'd then have six cubs back at the office in West Paducah, following Tweets and online radio for each of the six tournaments. I would've sent myself to spend all week in northern Kentucky to study about Ludlow, their 1975 state-championship win over Heath, the history of the school and the back and forth of times they've probably considered consolidation. Then I would've spent all day writing about the trip down U.S. 27 to Paris, and I would've probably stuck through the weekend to do something on Blanton Collier and go with the wife and daughter to First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Paris on Sunday morning.

  4. Mayfield Church of the Nazarene commercial on WYMC: "Do you want a real good sermon or a feel-good sermon? Have you been spending more time on Facebook than in your faith book, the Bible?"
