Oh, Kentucky

Five Kentucky National Guard troops are headed to New Mexico to join the U.S. Department of Homeland Security border patrol.

The bedbug problem at Louisville's Dosker Manor public-housing complex sounds awful (per this terrific report by Jacob Ryan for the Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting).

Newport High School has a new football coach, but it's not a happy story--by Matthew Monks in The River City News.

Chris Harris in the Commonwealth Journal: "So as of yet, the mystery of Somerset’s smelly Saturday night remains unsolved."

The IGAs in Calhoun and Livermore--the only two full-size groceries in McLean County--are closing.

A passing of the mom-and-pop-hardware torch is afoot in Lexington.

The Leitchfield city council has voted to compensate the local tourism commissioners.

Good jobs news from Bowling Green.

Rest in peace, Charles Martin "C.M." Newton, a native of Rockwood, Tennessee, who came north to come off the bench for the University of Kentucky's 1951 national-championship basketball team; who pitched in the New York Yankees minor-league system; who coached the Transylvania Pioneers to the 1963 NAIA basketball tournament; who moved on to the University of Alabama on the recommendation of Adolph Rupp to Bear Bryant; who coached Vanderbilt to the 1988 and '89 NCAA men's basketball tournaments; who chaired the NCAA rules committee when the shot clock, three-point line and coach's box were implemented; who, as the school's athletics director, brought national-champion coaches Rick Pitino and Tubby Smith to UK; who presided over USA Basketball when the "Dream Team" was formed and won Olympic gold, and who brought the first African-American basketball players to Transylvania and Alabama and the first African-American basketball coaches to UK, among other accomplishments.

Oh, Kentucky

Kentucky's most recently formed public library is in McLean County, created six years ago, and now it's among the first three in the state to participate in Library Economic Advantage Forum collaboration, reports Rhonda Miller with WKU Public Radio.

Oh, Kentucky

Yes, you have been seeing tundra swans north of Geneva.

Oh, Kentucky (1969)

The 1969 desk takes a road trip from Hoptown to Hartford.

"Your Picture Newspaper" put the following picture of the 11th District basketball champs on Page 1 of the March 13, 1969, edition. The Eagles ripped the Fordsville Trojans, 145-59, and then turned back the (1965-state-champion) Breckinridge County Tigers, 75-59, to win the district tournament.

"Ohio County played Drakesboro last night in the opening game of the regional tournament at Owensboro," added the Page 15 story. "Results of the game were not known at press time."

Says Wikipedia: "Ohio County is famous for its coal mines, which in the 1970s produced much of the nation's coal."

In 1969, though, basketball appeared to be a big deal. Here's a brief about some sort of rec-league game that ended 107-106!

I love newspaper activities like these.

Listing the hospital's visiting hours right there with the admissions is a brilliant stroke of community building.

Clean sweep for ol' OCHS ...

Oh, Kentucky

As of about 7:30 Central today, 83.26 percent of 229 visitors to a poll at the Glasgow Daily Times web site said they thought UK would beat U of L in the men's basketball Final Four tomorrow.

I totally agree with Billy Joe Fudge and ColumbiaMagazine.com (the future of journalism): underrated.
