The last three spots will go to three of the following four teams: Red Sox (96.2 percent chance), Cleveland (79.9 percent), Detroit (80.5 percent), or Houston (43.5 percent). I, for one, would love to see the Astros miss the playoffs.
Ten games ago, the Tigers were 84-63, and Cleveland was 74-71 -- an eight-game lead for Detroit. Since that time, the Tigers have gone 1-9 and Cleveland has gone 9-1. Now they're all tied up at 85-72, and it turns out that they are playing tonight in Cleveland.
ReplyDeleteNo score after two innings.
ReplyDeleteThis is the first time I've seen Cleveland all year -- they've been out of contention for months. But now, they are alive.
ReplyDeleteIn Pittsburgh, the Reds -- who desperately need a win -- trail the Pirates 1-0 in the top of the 5th. The Mets -- who are one game ahead of the Reds -- are warming up for a game with the Cubs in Wrigley Field.
ReplyDeleteDetroit is sponsored by Meijer. Cleveland is sponsored by Marathon Oil.
ReplyDeleteI love a Meijer.
DeleteIn the top of the 3d, the Tigers take a 1-0 lead on two singles and a sacrifice fly.
ReplyDeleteI've been listening to "Music for 18 Musicians" by Steve Reich. I make it all the way through every other year or so. I find it very soothing.
ReplyDeleteI listened to that album for the first time either this year or last.
DeleteBut in the bottom of the 3d, George Valera blasts a two-run homer to give Cleveland a 2-1 lead.
ReplyDeleteCleveland still leads 2-1 after four. Pittsburgh leads the Reds 2-0 after 7.
ReplyDeleteCleveland gets a single, a steal, and another single. They now lead 3-1 after 5. The Reds, having waited out Paul Skenes, now trail 2-1 in the bottom of the 8th. The Mets and Cubs are scoreless in the bottom of the third.
ReplyDeleteNow I'm listening to the Living Stereo recording of "Le Mer" and "The Pines of Rome," made by Fritz Reiner and the Chicago Symphony.
ReplyDeleteCleveland blows the game open with two more runs in the bottom of the 7th. They lead 5-1 and will take over first place in the AL Central. Meanwhile, the Reds trail 3-2 in the bottom of the 10th, while the Mets are losing 6-2 in the top of the 5th.
ReplyDeleteThe Reds tie the game with a single and a sacrifice fly. Reds still batting with a runner on first.
ReplyDeleteThe Reds cannot bring home the winning run, and we are 3-3 going into the 11th.
ReplyDeleteThe Yankees beat the ChiSox 8-1, the Blue Jays lose to the BoSox, and the Yankees and Blue Jays are now tied for first place in the AL East, with identical records of 90-68. Boston is three games back at 87-71.
ReplyDeleteAfter five, the Cubs lead the Mets 8-2.
ReplyDeleteThe Buccos tack on another run and lead 4-3 going into the bottom of the 11th.
ReplyDeleteThe Reds leave the bases loaded and lose, 4-3, in eleven innings. They blow a wonderful chance to catch the staggering Mets, who now trail the Cubs 10-2 in the top of the 7th.
ReplyDeleteCleveland beats Detroit 5-1, and takes over first place in the AL Central.
ReplyDeleteA's 6, Astros 0.
