Time for High School Basketball

Actually, of course, the season has been going on for awhile, but we've been distracted by other sports.  But here is the latest top 10 in Kentucky AP High School Boys' Basketball Poll.  Once again, we're going to be looking at the battle between Ballard and Trinity in the Seventh Region.  But on the whole, this is a pretty high-powered collection of teams:

1.  Louisville Ballard:  11-3 (all three losses to teams from out of state; won the King of the Bluegrass Tournament in December with a 65-54 win over Trinity)

2.  Louisville Trinity:  10-2 (8-1 against Kentucky teams)

3.  Hopkinsville:  12-1 (don't forget that the Tigers went to the Final Four last year)

4.  Scott Co:  11-2 (lost to Ballard 96-85 in the first game of the season)

5. Covington Catholic:  10-0 (I'm already looking forward to the battle between Cov Cath and Holmes for the Ninth Region crown)

6.  Montgomery Co:  14-0 (these guys also reached the Final Four last year)

7.  Covington Holmes:  9-1 (lost to the State Champs in last year's tournament)

8.  Newport Central Catholic:  10-3 (I would love to see the Ninth Region tournament)

9. Lexington Catholic:  11-3 (always dangerous)

10.  Lexington Lafayette:  8-5 (They have played 5 of the teams on this list, going 2-3 in those games)

So far, the best team in the First Region appears to be Graves County.  The Eagles, who are the defending Regional Champs, are 12-1 so far, with only five games (all easy wins) against in-state competition.

I thought last season was one of the best years in the history of Kentucky high school basketball.  From what I see here, this season might be just as good.

  4. Lady Mustangs, meanwhile, won, 60-58, at home against Wester County last night. They're 9-7 overall and 4-5 in the First Region.

Tops in the First Region are Murray (15-2, 6-0) and Paducah Tilghman (12-3, 6-0). In the Murray Bank Lady Tiger Classic, Dec. 26-28, McCracken County lost to Murray, 81-55, and to Tilghman, 68-65.

The AP's top-ranked girls' team is Anderson County, which is good news for John Herndon fans like me.
