Kentucky High-school Football, Week 8

Here are the games that most interest me among this weekend's Kentucky high-school football games.

McCracken County (5-2, No. 9 in this week's Associated Press poll for Class 6A) at Daviess County (4-3, 6A)--I'm starting to go all craycray for Class 6A. How the KHSAA playoff pairings are set up, only the Nos. 7 (Cecilia Central Hardin), 8 (Henderson County) and 9 (#Stampede) teams in this week's 6A poll will fall in the upper half of the bracket. Nos. 1-6 and 10 all have to deal with each other in the bottom half before the championship at L.T. Smith Stadium. Even if you extend out to the others receiving votes this week, you bring in only No. 11 (Louisville Butler) into the upper half. So, anyway, Orville J has the 'Stangs on a five-game roll. This will be a very tough game tonight in Owensboro (Daviess beat previously unbeaten Bowling Green South Warren a couple of weeks ago), and then we go home for an even tougher matchup next week with Henderson County (eighth-ranked Hens whipped Daviess last week, 41-12). But, whatever, we're in the playoffs (there are only four teams in District 1, and four get in), and we appear to be improving. The West Kentucky Star raves McCracken County is "in the midst of an incredible inaugural season." Haters gonna hate, but I don't care--I'm officially fired up. Go, McCHS!

Louisville Trinity (4-3, 6A No. 1) at Louisville Male (7-0, 6A No. 3) --The city game is my fan-bus road trip of Week 8. District 4 includes four teams--the Trinity Shamrocks, the Male Bulldogs, the Saint Xavier Tigers and the duPont Manual Crimsons--and those teams are ranked Nos. 1, 3, 5 and 6, respectively, in this week's Class 6A poll for the state. So far this season, Trinity has beaten St. X, 29-17, on Oct. 4 and Manual, 38-30, on Oct. 11. Male has beaten St. X, 44-40, on Oct. 4, and the Bulldogs and Crimsons play Oct. 25.

St. X (4-4, 6A No. 5) at Manual (6-1, 6A No. 6)--6A!

Marshall County (1-6, 6A) at Henderson County (6-1, 6A No. 8)--6A.

Lawrence County (6-2, 3A No. 9) at Belfry (7-0, 3A No. 1)

Corbin (6-1, 3A No. 6) at Bell County (4-3, 3A No. 8)

Paducah Tilghman (3-5, 3A) at Trigg County (4-3, 3A)

Crittenden County (3-4, 2A) at Barlow Ballard Memorial (6-2, 2A)

Murray (4-3, 2A No. 8) at Caldwell County (7-0, 2A No. 1)--The Legend of Elijah Sindelar grows.

Louisville DeSales (7-0, 2A No. 2) at Christian Academy-Louisville (8-0, 2A No. 3)

Union County (6-1, 2A No. 9) at Owensboro Catholic (5-2, 2A No. 4)

Middlesboro (6-1, 2A No 6) at Danville (4-3, 2A No. 10)

Covington Holmes (5-2, 4A) at Fort Thomas Highlands (7-0, 4A No. 1)

Franklin County (8-0, 5A No. 4) at Anderson County (6-1, 5A No. 3)--I love John Herndon.

London North Laurel (6-1, 5A No. 9) at Madison Southern (6-1, 5A No. 7)

Warren Central (4-3, 5A) at Bowling Green (6-0, 5A No. 1)--Purples coach Kevin Wallace has been dropping Twitter bombs of series history this week--Bowling Green leads, 33-12, all time and has won 19 of the last 23--but now he has moved on.

Christian County (4-3, 5A) at Graves County (5-2, 5A)

Mayfield (7-0, A No. 1) at Fulton County (0-5, A)

Westwood Fairview (7-0, A No. 3) at Raceland (5-2, A No. 7)

  1. Oldies1480.com just played "Don't Call Us; We'll Call You," Sugarloaf's second-biggest hit.

    Meanwhile, Tom Rogers reports in the WKDZ/WHVO E-dge email weekly:

    The Trigg County Wildcats picked up a big district win last week
    at Webster County, and now they face the biggest game of the season, as they host Paducah Tilghman tonight at Perdue Field. A win would go a long way towards wrapping up a home field game in the first round of the playoffs, and put the Wildcats close to the district championship. Coverage of Trigg County against Paducah Tilghman gets underway on 106.5 WKDZ and wkdzradio.com at 6:00pm with the Toyota of Hopkinsville "Friday Night Blitz."

    The Fort Campbell Falcons try to recover from a tough loss last Friday night at Paducah Tilghman, when they go back on the road tonight to Dixon to battle Webster County. A win over the Trojans would get the Falcons back in line to have a shot at a home game in the first round of the Class 3-A playoffs, and set up a huge district matchup next Friday night against Trigg County, back on post. Coverage of Fort Campbell and Webster County gets underway tonight at 6:00 on Oldies 96.5 WHVO and oldies1480.com, with the Toyota of Hopkinsville "Friday Night Blitz."

    Oh, man, now they're doing "I Feel the Earth Move" by Carole King. That was the leadoff hitter on Tapestry, and it was on one side of a 45 that featured "It's Too Late" on the other side. Now there's a 45 that was worth every one of the 85 cents or however much it cost at K-mart in 1971.

  2. Sixteen of the 18 prognosticators who weighed in at the Finish Line Car Wash & Detail Facebook poll--"McCracken Co HS Football will travel to Owensboro, KY to play Daviess Co. tonight. Who do you think will win?"--are picking McCracken County. One picked Henry County, and one picked the "Lakers" in the game between the McCracken County Mustangs and the Daviess County Panthers.

  4. Henderson's WSON this morning is joyfully playing "S-A-T-U-R-D-A-Y Night!" by the Bay City Rollers.

    Party it up while you can, Hens. And see you at the Marquette on Friday night: Cols (7-1, 2-0) at Mustangs (6-2, 2-0) for the Class 6A, District 1 title!

  5. Pineville, by the way, is 6-2 and was second among the two "others receiving votes" for last week's AP top 10 for Class A. Of the 12 teams that received votes, only No. 3 Fairview lost. The previously unbeaten Eagles fell, 36-14, at No. 7 Raceland. There remain two undefeated teams in Class A: No. 1 Mayfield and No. 2 Russellville, which are both 8-0 after beaten up on the woeful Fultons. The Cardinals won at City by 63-0, and the Panthers won at County by 47-0. Mayfield hosts Russellville this coming Friday at War Memorial Stadium.

  6. The Middlesboro Yellow Jackets at the Danville Admirals was a great game for uniforms. It was a huge Friday night in Class 2A, with four games pitting two teach each ranked in last week's AP Top 10:

    -- No. 1 Caldwell County whipped No. 8 Murray, 42-8;

    -- No. 3 CAL edged No. 2 DeSales, 27-24 ("the school’s on fire right now for football," CAL coach Stefan LeFors told The C-J's Jason Frakes);

    -- No. 4 Owensboro Catholic held off No. 9 Union County, 27-26, (the visiting Braves were down 20 points at half and even still after three quarters and would've tied but for a late blocked extra-point attempt) and

    -- No. 6 Middlesboro rolled at No. 10 Danville, 42-17.

  7. In Class 5A, No. 1 Bowling Green just keeps on keeping on: 48-14 over crosstown-rival Warren Central, which, after opening 0-3, had won each of its last four games by no fewer than 21 points. The only members of last week's AP top 10 that lost were No. 4 (and previously unbeaten) Franklin County, which lost at home to No. 3 Anderson County, 35-28; No. 6 (and previously unbeaten) Covington Scott, which lost at home to unranked Crestwood South Oldham, 30-20, and No. 9 London North Laurel, which lost at No. 7 Berea Madison Southern, 52-28.

    Of the state's seven Class 5A teams with one or no losses, only Mount Washington Bullitt East, was unranked last week. The Chargers are 7-1, with their lone loss by nine points at Class 6A Central Hardin. On Friday night, Bullitt East won, 35-12, at Hebron Estates North Bullitt; two weeks ago, it won at home, 56-6, over Shepherdsville Bullitt Central. So, for the third time, reports Thomas Barr in The Pioneer News, the Chargers claim the "Bullitt Cup."

    "Bullitt" County sounds like it should be the most rural county in Kentucky, and, of course, it's nowhere close to being that.
