  3. Because I love my country (and because I so enjoy The Bob Costas Show), I will not be watching the following today ...

-- 9 a.m. Central: Team USA vs. South Korea in a women's volleyball semifinal

-- 11 a.m.: women's basketball semifinal between United States and Australia

    -- 11:15 a.m.: Claressa Shields's gold-medal boxing match

-- 1:20 p.m.: men's triple-jump final, which features Will Claye of Phoenix and Christian Taylor of Tyrone, Ga.

-- 1:45 p.m.: Japan vs. United States for women's soccer gold

-- 2 p.m.: water polo gold-medal match pitting United States vs. Spain and men's 800m final, which features Duane Solomon of Lompoc, Calif., and Nick Symmonds of Boise, Idaho

-- 2:55 p.m.: Jamaica's Usain Bolt, Wallace Spearmon of Fayetteville, Ark., and not the Tennessee Titans' Chris Johnson in the men's 200m

  4. Wow! Huge week in Santa Clara. Hometown-girl Haley Anderson takes silver in women's open-water swimming! Hungary gold, Italy bronze.

  5. For the sake of Team USA, I've been watching a little figure horseback riding instead of the women's volleyball semi. Well, it was riveting. British Betty Draper and Valegro regaled the home crowd with gold in individual dressage for Team GB. The Netherlands took silver, and another Brit woman, who led her horse in a dance to some Elton John music from The Lion King, claimed bronze. This is historically Germany's turf, so I imagine it was an upset that Team Deutsche failed to reach the podium in this event.

Plus, with the equestrian events over, it is now official that the United States is going medalless in the sport for the first time (excluding 1980) since the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne, Australia.

    2. The United States has never won gold in women's volleyball. It won silver in 1984 and 2008. Brazil won gold in 2008, and Japan won the first-ever Olympic gold in the sport, in its home gym in Tokyo in 1964.

  7. Through eight events of the decathlon, Ashton Eaton, my main man from Bend, Ore., is leading teammate Trey Hardee by 162 points. Third place is Rico Freimuth of Germany, who is another 132 points back of Hardee. Four other competitors are within 56 points of third place.

The decathlon's last two events are the javelin throw, scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Central today, and the 1500m, scheduled for 3:20 p.m.

  8. Nicola Adams of Leeds wins the first Olympic women's boxing medal, at flyweight, over Ren Cancan of China. Bronze medals go to India and the United States. Congratulations, Marlen Esparza of Pasadena, Texas.

Given that I need to avoid Claressa Shields's middleweight bout at 11:15 Central, maybe I'll just spend the next 37 minutes, 47 seconds listening to Live at Leeds.

    1. United States-Australia has been the gold-medal game at each of the last three Olympics, and Team USA has won all three.

Team Australia has an accomplished coach, too, plus a seven-time WNBA All-Star who is her nation's flag-bearer and grudge-holder.

  12. Man, when Norway and South Korea meet up in women's handball, you can throw out the record book ... Norwegians lead, 21-17, in second half of today's first semifinal.

Second pits Montenegro and Spain. A win would clinch Montenegro's first medal of these games.

    1. South Korea has won six Olympic women's handball medals, including back-to-back gold in Seoul in 1988 and Barcelona in 1992. Norway has won four medals since the sport debuted in 1976 in Montreal, including one gold--in 2008 at Beijing.

Even I could not beat Usain Bolt, however (men's 200m: Jamaica gold, Jamaica silver, Jamaica bronze). He is just amazing.
