Month of MLB, Day 6

Because I was traveling, I didn't cover the first week of the MLB playoffs.  But here's where things stand in the Divisional Round right now:

National League:
Milwaukee 1 - 0 Chicago
Philadelphia 0 - 1 Los Angeles

American League:
Seattle 0 - 1 Detroit
Toronto 2 - 0 New York

Tonight the only game is Detroit at Seattle.  The two NL Series will play tomorrow.

  1. In the bottom of the 4th, Jorge Polanco hammers a home run to left field off of Detroit ace Tarik Skubal, and the Mariners lead 1-0.

  2. I thought Seattle played in Safeco Field, but their stadium is now called "T-Mobile Park."

  3. In the top of the 5th, the Tigers get a walk and a two-out single to put runners on the corners. That was their first hit of the game. At this point, the Seattle manager pulls Luis Castillo (who had been magnificent) to bring in Gabe Speier -- a left-hander -- to face left-hander Kerry Carpenter.

  4. Speier strikes out Carpenter, and Seattle leads 1-0 after 4 1/2 innings.

  5. In the bottom of the 6th, Polanco hits ANOTHER home run to left field. Skubal has completely dominated the rest of Seattle's lineup. But he trails 2-0, thanks to two home runs from Polanco.

  6. For the top of the 7th, Seattle brings in Eduard Bazardo (5-0 with an ERA of 2.52 in 73 appearances and 78 2/3 innings).

  7. After 7, Seattle still leads 2-0. Now the Mariners bring in Matt Brash (1-3, 2.47 ERA in 53 appearances).

  8. Thanks to a walk and an error, the Tigers have runners on 1st and 2d with one out in the top of the 8th.

  9. Spencer Torkelson, the cleanup hitter for Detroit, slices an opposite-field double down the right field line. Both runners score, and we are TIED at 2-all in the top of the 8th. Whatever happens, Skubal will not take the loss.

  10. Brash avoids further harm, and the game is tied at 2 going into the bottom of the 8th. The Tigers turn to former Washington National Kyle Finnegan. Finnegan was 1-4 with a 4.38 ERA in 40 appearances for Natstown, but he went 3-0 with an ERA of 1.50 in 16 appearances for Detroit.

  11. Cal Raleigh, who hit 60 home runs this year, whacks a one-out double to right field, and the Mariners are in business.

  12. Julio Rodriguez follows Raleigh with a double to left, and the M's lead 3-2.

  13. After 8, Seattle leads 3-2. The Mariners turn to their closer, Andres Munoz (3-3, ERA of 1.73 and 38 saves in 64 appearances). He will face the bottom of Detroit's order.

  14. Munoz mows down Detroit 1-2-3, and Seattle has a well-earned 3-2 win. That was an excellent baseball game, and I'm really happy the Mariners' fans got to see their guys win a playoff game.
