In the top of the 5th, the Tigers get a walk and a two-out single to put runners on the corners. That was their first hit of the game. At this point, the Seattle manager pulls Luis Castillo (who had been magnificent) to bring in Gabe Speier -- a left-hander -- to face left-hander Kerry Carpenter.
In the bottom of the 6th, Polanco hits ANOTHER home run to left field. Skubal has completely dominated the rest of Seattle's lineup. But he trails 2-0, thanks to two home runs from Polanco.
Spencer Torkelson, the cleanup hitter for Detroit, slices an opposite-field double down the right field line. Both runners score, and we are TIED at 2-all in the top of the 8th. Whatever happens, Skubal will not take the loss.
Brash avoids further harm, and the game is tied at 2 going into the bottom of the 8th. The Tigers turn to former Washington National Kyle Finnegan. Finnegan was 1-4 with a 4.38 ERA in 40 appearances for Natstown, but he went 3-0 with an ERA of 1.50 in 16 appearances for Detroit.
After 8, Seattle leads 3-2. The Mariners turn to their closer, Andres Munoz (3-3, ERA of 1.73 and 38 saves in 64 appearances). He will face the bottom of Detroit's order.
Munoz mows down Detroit 1-2-3, and Seattle has a well-earned 3-2 win. That was an excellent baseball game, and I'm really happy the Mariners' fans got to see their guys win a playoff game.
In the bottom of the 4th, Jorge Polanco hammers a home run to left field off of Detroit ace Tarik Skubal, and the Mariners lead 1-0.
ReplyDeleteI thought Seattle played in Safeco Field, but their stadium is now called "T-Mobile Park."
