HATTIESBURG SUPER REGIONAL:

Should be a full evening.
As of right now, here's what is happening:
ReplyDeleteFlorida leads South Carolina 3-0 in the top of the 6th.
Southern Mississippi leads Tennessee 4-0 in the bottom of the 5th.
Stanford leads Texas 2-0 in the bottom of the 4th.
LSU and Kentucky were supposed to start a 2 PM Central, but LSU claimed that the came could not be played due to the potential of thunderstorms. This was a surprised to the Kentucky media outlets, which pointed out that there was no evidence of storms anywhere in the Baton Rouge area. Anyway, the game is now scheduled to begin at 7:06 PM Central.
ReplyDeleteTexas Christian and Indiana State are also supposed to start at 7:06 PM Central. Oregon and Oral Roberts are supposed to start at 8 PM Central.
ReplyDeleteSouthern Miss and Tennessee are in a weather delay, so the Florida and Stanford games are the only ones actually being played right now. It is 6:08 PM Central on a day when eight Super Regionals were supposed to be played, and only two games have been completed so far.
ReplyDeleteBut I don't mind the delays. We are running out the end of the 2022-23 sports year. European Soccer finished today, the NBA will probably finish tomorrow, and we are playing the last games on campus for this season. I'm in no hurry to see it end.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile, they are playing the final of the KHSAA Baseball Championship in Lexington. Yesterday, Shelby County beat Owensboro Apollo 2-1 in one semi-final, while Whitley County beat Henderson County 2-1 in the other one. So it's the Shelby County Rockers against the Whitley County Colonels for the title.
ReplyDeleteAfter one inning, Whitley County leads 1-0. I don't remember ever posting anything about Whitley County on this blog.
ReplyDeleteAfter 4 innings, Texas and Stanford are tied at 2.
ReplyDeleteApparently the LSU manager has made clear that he does not want the game to start if there's a chance that the game will be stopped by weather. And apparently, in Baton Rouge the NCAA just goes along with LSU's manager.
ReplyDeleteWhitley County leads 1-0 after 2 in the last major KHSAA event of the 2022-23 year.
ReplyDeleteFor a college baseball fan, seeing Stanford and Texas in the Supers feels like a big deal -- it's like watching UCLA against Kansas in the Sweet 16 for basketball.
ReplyDeleteWhile the folks at MLB complain that everyone hates baseball, the popularity of college baseball continues to grow. Tonight, Florida has a school-record crowd of 8,851 for the Super game with South Carolina.
ReplyDeleteWhitley County leads 1-0 after 3 innings.
ReplyDeleteFlorida tacks on another run and leads 4-0 going into the bottom of the 8th. Stanford whacks a homer, and the Cardinal lead Texas 3-2 in the bottom of the 6th.
ReplyDeleteWhitley County leads 1-0 after 4 innings. Florida leads South Carolina 4-0 going into the bottom of the 9th.
ReplyDeleteNow they are saying that the LSU-Kentucky game will start at 8:06 PM Central. Meanwhile, Indiana State and Texas Christian have started in Fort Worth.
ReplyDeleteFlorida beats South Carolina 4-0 and becomes the first team to qualify for the 2023 College World Series. Meanwhile, UK's series hasn't even begun.
ReplyDeleteThis will be Florida's first trip to the CWS since 2018.
ReplyDeleteThere are 3,501 people at the KHSAA baseball final, where Whitley County leads 1-0 going into the 6th inning.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile, Indiana State has scored two runs in the top of the first in its game with Texas Christian. The Sycamores must win tonight to avoid elimination.
ReplyDeleteList of champions in 2022-23:
ReplyDeleteMLB: Houston Astros
NCAA Football: Georgia Bulldogs
NFL: Kansas City Chiefs
NCAA Women's Basketball: Louisiana State Tigers
NCAA Men's Basketball: Connecticut Huskies
English Premier League: Manchester City F.C.
UEFA Champions League: Manchester City F.C.
NBA: To be determined
NCAA Baseball: To be determined
NCAA
A two-run homer gives Stanford a 5-2 lead going into the 8th.
ReplyDeleteWhitley County adds a run with a double steal. Shelby County scores as well, and Whitley leads 2-1 going into the 7th inning.
ReplyDeleteWhitley County still leads 2-1 going into the bottom of the 7th. This is it.
ReplyDeleteUpdates on other games:
ReplyDeleteStanford leads Texas 5-2 in the 9th, but Texas has two runners on base with no one out.
Indiana State leads Texas Christian 2-0 in the middle of the 4th.
Southern Miss and Tennessee are still in a weather delay.
LSU and UK will not be starting at 8:06 PM Central.
Whitley County wins the KHSAA Baseball Championship, with a 2-1 victory over Shelby County. Huge win for the 13th Region.
ReplyDeleteGood for Whitley County! Louisville Ballard beat Henderson County in the softball championship over the weekend. I think that's a wrap for KHSAA 2022-23.
DeleteTexas comes roaring back. The Longhorns have tied Stanford 5-5, and they have the bases loaded with one out in the top of the 9th.
ReplyDeleteOn Twitter, Troy Howell reports that this is the first time since 2015 that the KHSAA Baseball Tournament wasn't won by a school from Louisville or Lexington, and the first time since 2011 that the title didn't go to a school in Jefferson County, Fayette County, or a county bordering those counties.
ReplyDeleteTexas gets a two out single. The Longhorns have scored FIVE RUNS in the top of the 9th, and they now lead Stanford 7-5.
ReplyDeleteThe rain is coming down pretty hard in Hattiesburg, so it seems unlikely that Southern Mississippi and Tennessee will play any more tonight. In Baton Rouge, LSU says that they are monitoring the weather. Of course, they could have played two games by now if they had started at 2 PM Central, as had been scheduled. But LSU always has an angle.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile, Texas Christian has exploded for five runs in the top of the 5th, and they lead Indiana State 5-2.
ReplyDeleteTexas is finally retired, and Stanford will have one chance to recover from a 7-5 deficit. The key to Texas's rally is that a fly ball to right was badly misplayed, allowing two runs to score and opening the floodgates for Texas.
ReplyDeleteKHSAA Champions for 2022-23:
ReplyDelete6A Football: Bullitt East
5A Football: Lex. Frederick Douglass
4A Football: Boyle Co.
3A Football: Christian Academy-Louisville
2A Football: Beechwood
1A Football: Pikeville
Boys' Basketball: Warren Cent.
Girls' Basketball: Lou. Sacred Heart
Baseball: Whitley Co.
Softball: Lou. Ballard
There you go. Thanks for this list.
DeleteTexas closes out Stanford in the bottom of the 9th, and stuns the Cardinal with a 7-5 victory.
ReplyDeleteOral Roberts, trying to bounce back from a 9-8 loss in which ORU blew an 8-0 lead, has a 2-1 lead over Oregon in the bottom of the second.
ReplyDeleteThe Southern Miss/Tennessee game has been officially delayed until tomorrow. The game will resume at 11 AM Central, and then Game Two will begin at 2 PM Central.
ReplyDeleteIndiana State chose not to host their Super with Texas Christian, and now it looks as though the Sycamores will be eliminated. Texas Christian leads 6-2 in the top of the 6th.
ReplyDeleteI used to work with a guy who'd gone to Indiana State, and he was heartbroken about this whole sequence of affairs on Facebook last night. I don't blame him.
DeleteThe LSU/UK situation has become farcical. To recap: The game was supposed to start at 2 PM Central. The skies were clear at 2 PM, and there has been no rain in Baton Rouge since. But LSU kept insisting that bad weather was coming and that the game should be delayed. Now it's almost 9 PM Central, thousands of people have been waiting at the stadium all day, and the game still hasn't begun. LSU now claims they will start at 9:06 PM Central, but I will believe it when I see it.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile, in the more normal parts of America, Oral Roberts leads Oregon 3-1 after 2.
ReplyDeleteIndiana State hasn't given up yet. The Sycamores have closed to within 6-4 in the bottom of the 6th.
ReplyDeleteIn the top of the 4th, Oregon blasts a two-run homer to tie their game with ORU at 3 to 3.
ReplyDeleteAt 9:06 PM Central, after waiting around all day, Kentucky and LSU have finally begun their Super Regional playoff.
ReplyDeleteUK is going with a gray hat with that silly new Wildcat logo and a blue bib. Gray shirt with blue undershirt and the word "KENTUCKY" in blue letters and blue numerals on the back. Gray pants. Pretty good road uniform except for the hat logo.
ReplyDeleteThat logo is awful!
DeleteLSU going with purple hats with LSU in gold, purple jersey with the word "TIGERS" in white with gold outline, and white numerals with gold outline on the back. White pants with a thin purple stripe. I prefer all white for the home team, but this isn't too bad.
ReplyDeleteWith two out in the bottom of the 1st, LSU homers to take a 1-0 lead and this will likely conclude our coverage of the LSU/UK Super.
ReplyDeleteHere was Whitley County's road to the Title:
ReplyDelete13th Region (at Corbin):
05/23: Whitley Co. 7, Middlesboro 4
05/24: Whitley Co. 9, N. Laurel 2
05/25: Whitley Co. 7, Corbin 1
KHSAA First Round and Quarter-Final (at Counter Clocks Field, Lexington):
06/02: Whitley Co. 4, LaRue Co. 3
06/03: Whitley Co. 7, S. Warren 4
KHSAA Semi-Final and Final (at Kentucky Proud Park, Lexington):
06/09: Whitley Co. 2, Henderson Co. 1
06/10: Whitley Co. 2, Shelby Co. 1
After 4, Oral Roberts leads Oregon 4-3.
ReplyDeleteJason Frakes reports that this is Whitley County's first title in any sport since 1985, when the girls' basketball team beat Lou. Atherton 38-37 to win the championship.
ReplyDeleteFrakes also reports that Whitley County is the first team from Eastern Kentucky to win the state title since Boyd County in 2001, and the first "mountain school" to do it since Paintsville in 1990.
ReplyDeleteIn case you were wondering, the last team from Western Kentucky to win the baseball title was Christian County in 2004. No team from the First Region has won the title since Paducah Tilghman beat Owensboro in 1960. McCracken County reached the final in 2019, but lost to Lex. Tates Creek 4-2. McCracken County reached the final again in 2021, but lost 10-0 to Lou. Trinity in five innings.
ReplyDeleteTexas Christian rolls out a school record crowd of 8,994 for tonight's game, underscoring Indiana State's decision to send its team on the road.
ReplyDeleteAfter 4 1/2 innings, Oregon leads ORU 5-4.
ReplyDeleteKentucky Displays Trademark Fight In Season-Ending Defeat
ReplyDeleteby UK ACPR
BATON ROUGE, La. – Kentucky defied the odds all season but couldn’t do it one final time, seeing its remarkable 2023 season come to an end with an 8-3 defeat to LSU at Alex Box Stadium on Sunday night.
Picked to finish at the bottom of the Southeastern Conference and considered by most college baseball pundits an outside shot to even reach the conference tournament, Kentucky advanced to just its second-ever Super Regional and won 40 games for just the seventh time in program history, which spans more than 100 seasons.
Although the ride came to an end on the bayou, the Wildcats put up a valiant fight until the very end. Senior Jackson Gray, playing wat would be his final game of college baseball, bashed a leadoff home run to give the Cats a 1-0 lead but LSU’s talent and depth proved too much to overcome. The Cats made the powerhouse Tigers sweat though and a hush fell over the crowd of nearly 15,000 when Reuben Church’s potential game-tying double down the left field line in the seventh inning landed an inch foul down.
Still, it was one last hurrah for Devin Burkes and Nolan McCarthy, who each homered. Also, Kentucky native Mason Moore punctuated his meteoric postseason rise with another dominating effort on the mound. He tossed 14.1 scoreless innings in the NCAA Tournament.
UK ACPR was displaying some trademark fight right until the bitter end, too.
