College World Series, Day Three

With the U.S. Open and the NBA Playoffs both finished, we now only have one event remaining in the 2021-22 sports year:  the College World Series.  Here's what has happened so far:

Friday, June 17:
Oklahoma 13, (5) Texas A & M 8
Notre Dame 7, (9) Texas 3

Saturday, June 18:
Arkansas 17, (2) Stanford 2
Mississippi 5, (14) Auburn 1

Sunday, June 19:
(5) Texas A & M 10, (9) Texas 2 (Texas eliminated)

So the other game tonight will feature Oklahoma and Notre Dame.  It feels like they should be meeting in the Orange Bowl, but this will be a baseball game.

  1. In the bottom of the 3d, Oklahoma uses an infield single, a stolen base, another single, a passed ball, and another single to score two runs. Sooners lead 2-0 going into the top of the 4th.

  2. Oklahoma shortstop Sebastian Orduno leads off the top of the 4th with a double, but is thrown out trying to stretch it to a triple. Sooners still lead 2-0.

  3. More aggression on the base paths. With two outs, John Spikerman -- Oklahoma's leadoff batter -- reaches base on a missed third strike. Then Peyton Graham whacks a single to right. Spikerman goes for third, and the throw appears to have him -- but he crashes into the third baseman and the ball flies out of the glove. Spikerman goes past third, stops, and begins walking back to the base, thinking the ball has bounced well out of play. But in fact, the ball bounced off the third base coach and is only a few feet away. Notre Dame's third baseman grabs the ball and tags Spikerman before he gets back to third. Three outs. OU leads 2-0 after 4, but the Sooners blew some great chances in that inning.

  4. Oklahoma keeps running, and this time it works out. The Sooners get two singles to put runners on first and third. The next batter bunts. With no play at the plate, the Irish go for the out at first -- but throw the ball away. Both runners score, and the batter races all the way to third. The next batter singles him home, and Oklahoma suddenly leads 5-0 in the bottom of the 5th.

  5. Line drives and keeping the ball on the ground is usually the way to go in Omaha, and Oklahoma is really taking advantage of that fact.

  6. Notre Dame hits a two-run homer in the top of the 6th, but Oklahoma scratches out another run with a walk and two singles. Sooners lead 6-2 after 6.

  7. Oklahoma rolls to an easy 6-2 win, and Notre Dame will have to play an elimination game against Texas A & M.
