NFL Poll Update: Week 2

The AP's NFL Poll is back!  Last year, Baltimore finished number one in the poll, before getting pounded in the playoffs by Tennessee.  Let's see what happens this year.  Here is your top 10:

1.  Kansas City:  1-0
2.  Baltimore:  1-0
3.  New Orleans:  1-0
4.  Seattle:  1-0
5.  Green Bay:  1-0
6.  Pittsburgh:  1-0
7.  Buffalo:  1-0
8.  New England:  1-0
9.  Los Angeles:  1-0
10.  Arizona:  1-0

The Football Team moved from a tie for 30 into a tie for 19 with a 27-17 win over the Eagles.  The Dolphins fell from 25 to 29 after a loss to the Pats.

The Game of the Week is the Sunday Night game, with the Cam Newton-led Patriots traveling to Seattle to take on the number-4 Seahawks.  Seattle needs to win this game, but the Pats will want to show what they can do in their first nationally televised game without Tom Brady since the Clinton years.

Personally, I'm interested in the Ravens' trip to Houston.  The Texans are not in the top 10 because they were hammered to open the season.  But they were hammered by the Chiefs, who are a pretty good team.  Houston reached the quarterfinals last year, and they will be frantic to avoid going 0-2 to start the season.  This will be a very good win for whichever team gets it.

  1. There ought to be more metrics for people who root for bad teams like I do. For example, what is the average latest point in a game when your bad team had a legitimate chance to win? What are the ranking of all the non-playoff teams by chronological elimination from postseason contention? Off-field embarrassments per season? These sorts of measurements would really help me compare one Dolphins season to another or a Dolphins season to, say, a Lions season.

    1. I agree with this. I've watched every Redskins team since 1993, which has to be one of the most forgettable stretches of football for any team in NFL history. But to me, there was a big difference between watching Joe Gibbs scrape out two playoff trips in four years, and watching Jim Zorn's teams just be hammered week after week.

    1. Maybe the Raiders could slip into the AFC picture, but it's hard for me to see where.
