We have now reached the end of the regular season in high school football, and the top 20 teams in Kentucky -- according to Max Preps -- are below (private schools in italics). Male beat Manual in a 22-21 thriller to finish unbeaten. Mayfield beat Madisonville 53-50 (!!!) to finish as the only team from Western Kentucky in the top 20:
1. Cov. Catholic: 10-0
2. Lou. Male: 10-0
3. Lou. Trinity: 8-2
4. Boyle Co: 10-0
5. Johnson Cent: 10-0
6. Lex. Douglass: 10-0
7. N. Hardin: 10-0
8. Lou. Manual: 8-2
9. Pikeville: 10-0
10. Lou. St. Xavier: 6-4
11. Lex. Christian: 9-1
12. Scott Co: 9-1
13. Ashland Blazer: 8-2
14. S. Oldham: 9-1
15. Franklin Co: 10-0
16. Somerset: 9-1
17. Mayfield: 9-1
18. Lex. Catholic: 6-4
19. Ft. Thomas Highlands: 6-4
20. Lou. Fern Creek: 7-3
Here are other teams of interest:
24. Bowling Green: 6-3
26. Owensboro: 9-1
27. S. Warren: 9-1
35. McCracken Co: 7-3
43. Madisonville-N. Hopkins: 8-2
44. Hopkinsville: 7-3
45. Paducah Tilghman: 7-3
50. Henderson Co: 7-3
65. Caldwell Co: 8-2
75. Graves Co: 6-4
86. Murray: 7-3
112. Crittenden Co: 8-2
113. Trigg Co: 6-4
128. Union Co: 5-5
Now as you know, in an effort to kill all fan interest in high school football, the KHSAA has adopted one of the silliest playoff systems in the country. We have six state champions, which is at least two too many, and we have five rounds of playoffs, which is also two too many. So I'm not going to pay any attention to the playoffs until we get down to the quarterfinals. In any event, I'm more interested in the final rankings in Max Preps than in the state playoffs anyway.
