This Week in Western Kentucky

OK, we're down to the final 96 in the KHSAA Football Playoffs.  This is the last week we will only do games from Western Kentucky -- next week we'll do the State Quarter-Finals.  This week, I think the game to watch will be in Princeton -- where Caldwell will be facing a very formidable collection of Adair County Indians.  By the way, the Adair County High School web page tells us that ACHS stands for:

Attitude
Commitment
Hard work
Success

On the other hand, the web page for the Caldwell County Schools features a detailed discussion of:

Gifted
And
Talented
Education

If the teams are as competitive on the field as the schools are in word play, it should be quite a game.

For the record, I would also like to see Hoptown v. Franklin-Simpson or E-Town v. Tilghman.

One final point about the schools in Hardin County.  They have three high schools in the Hardin County School District (which does not include E-Town High.)  North Hardin was formed in 1962.  In 1990, they merged East Hardin and West Hardin to form Central Hardin.  Then, in 2001, they built a new high school over in Radcliff, which they call "John Hardin."  So now they have North Hardin, Central Hardin, and John Hardin.  It really makes me glad that I got to grow up with Heath, Lone Oak, and Reidland.  Also, I really want to know if there was ever a South Hardin -- and if not, why not.

As always, home teams listed first:

Class 1A:
Russellville (9-2) v. Campbellsville (8-3)
Bethlehem (8-3) v. Crittenden Co. (7-4)

Class 2A:
Mayfield (10-1) v. Butler Co. (9-2)
Owensboro Catholic (9-2) v. Murray (7-4)

Class 3A:
Caldwell Co. (9-2) v. Adair Co. (10-1)
Elizabethtown (11-0) v. Paducah Tilghman (8-3)

Class 4A:
Hopkinsville (10-1) v. Franklin-Simpson (7-4)
S. Warren (11-0) v. Allen Co.-Scottsville (6-5)

Class 5A:
Owensboro (10-1) v. Greenwood (9-2)
Bowling Green (10-1) v. Christian Co. (8-3)

Class 6A:
McCracken Co. (9-2) v. N. Hardin (4-7)
Cent. Hardin (8-3) v. Meade Co. (3-8)

  2. In Class A, the only member of the season-ending AP Top 10 that is out of the running is No. 6 Alexandria Bishop Brossart (9-2), which lost at home last week against Raceland-Worthington (7-4). Pretty much everyone seems to call it just "Raceland," and that's probably because Raceland-Worthington High is in Raceland and not Worthington. In any event, the Rams play at No. 1 Paintsville (11-0) this week in the Region 3 semis.

The other games in Class A (outside of western Kentucky/Region 1) that I want to keep an eye on are ...

-- No. 9 Westwood Fairview (7-4) at No. 3 Paris (10-0). Paris plays at home for however long they keep winning right up until the state championship.

-- Williamsburg (5-5) at No. 4 Pikeville (9-2). Mayfield moved up in this year's new KHSAA alignment, and Williamsburg was the 2014 Class A runnerup.

  3. The whole AP Top 10 is among the 16 teams still alive in Class 2A. That includes No. 4 Louisville DeSales and No. 10 Newport Catholic Central, which were the state champ and runner-up in 2014. No. 1 Mayfield, which won the Class A title, would have home-field advantage all the way to the state championship.

  4. Same story in Class 3A: The whole AP Top 10 is still in contention, and, in this tournament, even the other three teams that also received votes for the final poll remain alive. No. 3 Boyle County (10-1) at No. 4 Louisville Central (9-2), the 2014 state runner-up, is probably the best 3A game in the state tonight.

  5. Region 1 is the story in Class 4A, as wins by No. 1 Bowling Green South Warren and No. 2 Hoptown would set up a humdinger regional championship next week. The 2014 state champ and runner-up in 4A--Fort Thomas Highlands and Owensboro, respectively--are both up in 5A this year.

    1. Words cannot express my happiness that Highlands has been moved up to 5A.

  6. Edgewood Dixie Heights 21 at Class 5A No. 10 Montgomery County 17 was about the closest thing we had to an upset in any class during last week's first round of the playoffs. But, my gosh, Dixie was the 6A runnerup last year. The defending 5A state champ is No. 3 Pulaski County (10-1). I'm going to check back in on this tournament about this time next week.

  7. Region 2, of course, is the big deal in Class 6A. Tonight's games are No. 6 Louisville duPont Manual (9-2) at No. 1 Louisville Male (11-0) and No. 2 and defending state champ Louisville Trinity (10-1) vs. No. 5 Louisville Saint Xavier (7-4) at Papa John's Stadium.

    GO, MCCRACKEN COUNTY!
