This Week in Western Kentucky

Only two weeks left in the regular season, so it's time to start getting ready for the playoffs -- and, more importantly, for basketball season.  But before we all go inside to watch hoops, here are this week's football games (home teams listed first):

Ballard Mem. (4-3) v. Murray (5-3)
Crittenden Co. (6-2) v. Russellville (7-1)
Fort Campbell (2-6) v. Paducah Tilghman (5-3)
Fulton Co. (0-8) v. Halls (Tenn.)
Graves Co. (4-4) v. Owensboro (7-1)
Hopkins Co. Cent. (2-6) v. Hopkinsville (7-1)
Logan Co. (0-8) v. Calloway Co. (4-4)
Marshall Co. (2-6) v. Owensboro Apollo (2-6)
Muhlenberg Co. (4-4) v. McCracken Co. (7-1)
Union Co. (5-3) v. Trigg Co. (2-7)
Webster Co. (1-7) v. Mayfield (7-1)

Out of state mascot watch:  The mascot of Halls H.S., in Halls, Tenn. (in Lauderdale Co.) is the Tiger.  The Halls Tigers will be going for the Fulton sweep this weekend.

Just a few more district mismatches to wrap up, and then we can see how everyone does in the playoffs.  We have a solid collection of playoff-quality teams, and we look forward to seeing how they do.  In the meantime, I would recommend going to Marion to see if Crittenden County can give Russellville a good game.

  1. Could be a big night in Barlow, too.

  2. Per WRUS 610 AM, Crittenden County led this game briefly, early in the second quarter, 7-6. But then Russellville returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown.

Now it's 33-14, Panthers, late in the third.

  3. Headed to Q4 on WRUS and in Marion, and Russellville leads Crittenden County, 40-14. The radio guys are concerned about how often the Panthers are having leg cramps this late in the season. I, on the other hand, raked leaves for 20 minutes this evening, and I've been complaining so much about how sore my neck and shoulders are that one might think I moved pianos for a living.

  4. Seventy yards of penalties have been called against Russellville tonight, and the WRUS guys have had enough. "That's trash," says one as the Panthers are called for pass interference to extend a Crittenden County possession.

  5. One WRUS guy: "This is awful."

The other WRUS guy: "It's terrible officiating."

The first WRUS guy: "It's bad both ways. We're not just saying it's bad against Russellville."

  6. Crittenden punches in a two-yard touchdown run, and the kick makes it 40-21 with 9:52 to go.

    "The officials have lost it."

  8. It's kind of neat that "end of 3rd" is among the U.S. top-10-trending terms on Twitter at the moment:

Poor Harold Reynolds. Every time he does color commentary, there are a barrage of Tweets criticizing him. I like him on MLB Network.

Harold Reynolds is still salty from Bo Jackson throwing him out at home from the wall

  10. After recovering the onside kick, Crittenden County drives to the Russellville 1 but fumbles. The Panthers recover in the end zone and take over with eight minutes to go at their 20.

  12. Russellville grinds away more than five minutes of game clock and extends its lead at Crittenden County to 46-21.

  13. Final: 46-21. Russellville is the district champion and will have home-field advantage for however long in the Class A playoffs it keeps playing until the state final at WKU.
