College Baseball Update

The College World Series starts today.  Here are the eight teams:

Virginia (39-22) (4th CWS appearance) (no titles)
Arkansas (40-23) (8th appearance) (no titles)
(4) Florida (49-16) (9th appearance) (no titles)
(5) Miami (Fla.) (49-15) (24th appearance) (champs in 1982, '85, '99, and 2001)

(2) LSU (53-10) (17th appearance) (champs in 1991, '93, '96, '97, 2000, and '09)
(7) Texas Christian (49-13) (3d appearance) (no titles)
Cal-St. Fullerton (39-23) (17th appearance) (champs in 1979, '84, '95, and 2004)
Vanderbilt (47-19) (3d appearance) (champs in 2014)

In the 26 seasons from 1979 through 2004, Miami (Fla.), LSU, and CS-Fullerton combined to win the CWS 13 times.

  1. In Game One of the College World Series, UVA broke a 3-3 tie with runs in the 8th and 9th innings to beat Arkansas 5 to 3.

  2. In Game Two, Miami jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after 2 1/2 innings. But Florida responded with 1 in the bottom of the third, and so far they have put up 8 runs in the bottom of the 4th. The Gators are still batting in the 4th, and they lead 9-2.

  3. The Gators have finally been retired, but they put up ELEVEN runs in the bottom of the fourth, and they now lead 12-2.

  4. Florida pounds Miami 15-3, setting up a match-up on Monday between UVA and the Gators. Meanwhile, the Canes will face Arkansas in an elimination game.

  5. LSU and TCU were locked into a scoreless tie when the LSU's pitcher made back to back throwing errors. Those two runners subsequently scored, and Texas Christian leads 2-0 after 3 1/2 innings.

  6. In the bottom of the 4th, LSU puts together two hits and a groundball to score a run. Texas Christian leads 2-1 after 4.

  7. In the top of the 5th, the roof has caved in on LSU. The Tigers gave up two walks, a hit batsman, and made an error. They have also allowed two singles. It all adds up to four runs and counting for the Horned Frogs, who now lead 6-1 and who are still batting.

  8. Texas Christian still leads 6-1 after 5. The Frogs have only 4 hits -- while LSU has five. But LSU has also made three errors, to none for Texas Christian. And the Horned Frogs threw out a runner at home plate back in the third.

  9. LSU went 53-10 in the regular season, but they were humiliated today, committing 4 errors and using 8 pitchers as they stagger to a 10-3 defeat at the hands of Texas Christian.

  10. I would've never guessed that TCU, Virginia, Arkansas and Florida have no titles and Fullerton has four.
