College Baseball Update

The regular season is finished.  Murray State (14-16 in conference play) and Eastern Kentucky (12-18 in conference play) didn't qualify for the OVC Tournament, so their season is finished.  Morehead (16-14) will be heading to Jackson, Tenn. for the Tournament.  The top seed will be SEMO, which went 23-7 in the OVC.  Good for the former Indians.

In the Sun Belt, Western went 15-15.  They will be the number 5 seed in the Sun Belt Tournament, which will take place in Mobile, Ala.  Their first game will be at 9 A.M. Central on Wednesday.  Louisiana-Lafayette, the top seed in the Sun Belt Tournament, is the number 2 team in the nation.

In the SEC, UK went 14-16 and they will be the number 9 seed in the SEC tournament.  They have to survive a single-elimination game against number 8 Alabama in the first round of the tournament, which is being held, as usual, in Hoover, Ala.  That game will take place tomorrow at 4:30 P.M. Central.

So unless something surprising happens, the only team from the Commonwealth that will appear in this year's NCAA baseball Tournament is Louisville, which won the American Athletic Conference with a record of 19-5.  Louisville will be the number 1 seed in the AAC Tournament, which takes place in Clearwater, Fla.

  1. Good for the Rajin' Cajuns. But I do want to bust on the LaLa-Fayette flow for just one momento. Once, in 1993 or '94, the Lady Toppers went down there to play the University of Southwestern Louisiana in some women's hoops, and the whole place stunk from the rodeo that had taken place the night before. Also, the Lady Tops' grad-assistant coach got up on a ladder and affixed a frayed net to the rim with athletic tape, and this was in pregame.

    2. Channel 6 always referred to the baseball team that way. I don't know if the Sun-Democrat did.
