Tour Championship by Coca-Cola

This weekend's Tour Championship by Coca-Cola--commencing now in Atlanta ("Hotlanta")--could bring significant clarity or totally muddle this year's HeathPostdotcom Yahoo! Fantasy Golf season.

Matthew Vaughn's Siler City Samurai lead the season points, 4,451 to 4,357, but my Ginger Reeves lead in tournament victories, 18 to 17. If the Sams win this tournament, then Matthew's guys are the obvious league champions. The Sams would have won the points championship, and they'll have equaled in tournament wins. My Gingers would have to come up with a significant blowout victory this weekend (94 points or more) in order to achieve such a definitive season triumph. However, if we courageously prevail this weekend, you're going to have a hard time talking Ginger Nation off our high of winning 19 tournaments to the Sams' 17.

So, as Gary Danielson might say, HOLD ON TO YOUR HATS, BECAUSE THINGS ARE ABOUT TO GET WILD IN HOTLANTA!

For today's first round, our competitors are:

-- Sams' Sergio Garcia, even through one hole, currently good for 18 Yahoo! Fantasy Golf points
-- Sams' Jason Day, teeing off at noon Central
-- Gingers' Jim "JFuryk" Furyk, 12:10 p.m.
-- Gingers' Brandt "Sneds" Snedeker, 12:20 p.m.
-- Gingers' Matt "Kuch" Kuchar, 12:40 p.m.
-- Sams' Steve Stricker, 12:40 p.m.
-- Sams' Zach Johnson,  12:50 p.m.
-- Gingers' Adam "AScott" Scott, 12:50 p.m.

So, at the moment, the Sams lead the Gingers, 18-0, this weekend.

  1. Garcia is still even, now through three holes. But with Webb Simpson taking the tournament lead at 2-under through two holes, the Sams' lead on the Gingers has been cut to 16-0.

  2. And there goes Jason Day, coming in with a birdie on No. 1. With the tournament lead still at 2-under (now shared by Simpson and Charl Schwartzel), Day's start puts 18 big points for now into the Sams' column. Garcia remains even, now through six holes.

  3. On PGA Tour radio, they just pointed out that Phil Mickelson has never won the PGA Player of the Year Award. I didn't know that.

    Tiger has won this award ten times: 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2009.

  4. All eight of our golfers are now on the course, and my Kuch has joined the leaders at 2-under.

  6. Well, it became clear that I was going to lose, and so I lost interest in this dealio. But, to close the loop, congratulations are in order to both Matthew's Siler City Samurai (for closing the HeathPostdotcom Yahoo! Fantasy Golf season with two tournament wins to tie for the tournament-wins title and win decisively the season-points title) and my Ginger Reeves (for their plucky and courageous dash to second place). Well done, Gingers (and Sams)!
