Album Review: Tales of Us by Goldfrapp

Back around 2000 Alison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory met and formed Goldfrapp. It's one of those wonderful musical pairings where she writes and sings and he composes and produces whatever their latest album needs.

Goldfrapp was late to the scene being 34 when their first album hit the scene in 2000, but she seems to be growing evermore with every album. I'm a big fan of the band who has a good electropop sense about them that's fun and smart, and so I was looking forward to hearing their latest offering. On this latest album they have thrown the electropop to the side in favor of a quiet, lush, acoustic, album that's all about mood and pace. Lyrically Goldfrapp has gone in for abstract, poetic fragments of thought and expressions that may not always work for me lyrically but do work perfectly for how the songs and the album is constructed.

They have talked about taking a lot of influence from cinema for this album, but I believe they also took a lot of influence from late 80's bands like the Cocteau Twins, The Cure, etc.

As a singer Goldfrapp has never sounded better and so this album is hard to get away from for me. It will be a perfect album for the upcoming colder fall days and for thoughtful nighttime walks.

Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 3 out of 5 stars for Pretty Good.
