I decided a 46-year-old man has no business declaring that any team of teen-agers that hasn't yet actually lost a game couldn't possibly win a high-school state championship. I mean, honestly, how stupid can one be to not understand that unimaginable, magical things happen all of the time--and especially in (great) sports? I grew and have grown increasingly less proud of my post last Friday. I retroactively offer that confession under the umbrella of the following (also great) pastoral prayer from Bro. Stevie Wonder:

  2. State-title contenders who are idle this weekend: Leslie County (3-0 in Class 2A), Bourbon County (2-1 in 3A), McCracken County (No. 5 and 3-0 in 6A) and Meade County (No. 7 and 3-0 in 6A).

I defy any fan anywhere to top this streak! The Trigg game will be the 323rd straight Caldwell football game for Philip and Pam Phelps.

  4. Class A ... No. 1 Mayfield wins at 2A No. 4 Murray, 21-10. No. 2 Frankfort absorbs first loss of season, 22-13 at 5A No. 6 Franklin County, 22-13. Everybody else in the AP Top 10 won. Nice win for No. 3, 4-0 Williamsburg, 52-21 at 3A Wayne County.

  5. 2A ...

HUGE win for unranked Middlesboro, 17-14, over previously unbeaten rival Bell County, which is ranked second in Class 3A. Middlesboro scored on a fumble-recovery return for a 7-6 lead in the third quarter and then allowed Bell County to tie at 14 with 56 seconds remaining. But the Yellow Jackets returned the ensuing kickoff to the Bobcats' 45 and eventually drove to win on a 22-yard field goal on the last play of the game.

Never thought I'd see the day when Middlesboro beat bell two years in a row

No. 1 DeSales, No. 2 Caldwell County and No. 3 CAL all won, each by at least 30 points. As previously mentioned, No. 4 Murray lost to Mayfield. No. 6 NewCath fell to 0-3, and this time the big, good opponent was 6A Simon Kenton. 3A No. 7 Corbin took a 28-7 lead after three quarters against No. 8 Danville and then held on for a 28-20 win. Unranked Shawnee swamped Fort Knox, 46-8, to move to 4-0 for the first time since 1971! Both Crittenden County and Shelby Valley lost for the first time. Somerset is 0-4 after falling, 53-19, at home to Class A No. 7 Hazard.

  6. In 3A, No. 1 Belfry won at Somerset Southwestern, 28-7. No. 2 Bell County lost to Middlesboro. No. 3 Bourbon County was idle, and No. 4 South Warren might leap to second in next week's poll after winning at No. 8 Etown, 38-7. Unranked Adair County, Fleming County and West Carter all remain undefeated.

  7. No. 1 Highlands and most of the rest of the Class 4A AP Top 10 won last night, but the losses that did happen were all intriguing:

-- No. 4 Owensboro lost at home, 42-34, to 5A's and maybe the state's best team, Bowling Green, after leading through three quarters.

-- No. 7 Lexington Catholic lost at home, 49-26, to 6A Lexington Bryan Station, which last week lost at home, 47-41, to Highlands.

-- No. 8 Ashland Blazer lost at home and in overtime, 29-27, to Russell, which is unranked in Class 3A.

Also, state-champ Collins got its first win of the season, 14-3, against Shelby County, and my Maroon homeboys rocked Hoptown, 60-42, as one Madisonville-North Hopkins runner, Ryan Bowman, carried for 392 yards and five touchdowns!

  8. None of the losses in the 5A Top 10 were stunners: No. 4 Cooper at good 6A Campbell County, 17-7; No. 8 Anderson County at good 4A Boyle County, 48-26, and No. 10 John Hardin (0-4) at good 4A Highlands, 49-7. Unranked Iroquois, Scott and Bullitt Central all remained unbeaten.

  9. It was moving night in 6A, as none of the Top 10 lost, except No. 10 PRP, which was obliterated, 43-0, at No. 6 Manual, and all three of the previously unbeaten, unranked teams (Dunbar, Muhlenberg County and Seneca) lost.
