Kentucky High-school Football, Week 6

Um ... wow.

Other Thursday-night finals from Week 6 in KHSAA football: Louisville DuPont Manual (ranked sixth in this week's Associated Press poll for Class 6A) beat Louisville Butler (6A No. 10), 18-14; Hebron Conner (5A No. 9) won at Union Cooper, 26-21; Covington Catholic (4A No. 7) won at Fort Mitchell Beechwood (A No. 5), 28-7, and Westwood Fairview (A No. 3) won at Pike County Central, 44-37.

Here are some highlights from among the rest of this week's games.

Butler County (3-2, 2A) at Union County (4-1, 2A)--In a season preview back in August, Bowling Green's WBKO reported that Todd County Central's and Warren East's 2012 starting quarterbacks were now senior Butler County Bears in Morgantown. It was a happy surprise, because, the coach said, "we're used to kids moving out of Butler County." Indeed, Zach Greenwell reports in The Daily News that the two transfers have been splitting time at position and have led the Bears to a solid start. Union County, meanwhile, opened with a big loss at great Caldwell County--but has since won each of its next four by at least 20 points. Tonight's Morgantown-to-Morganfield affair is my fan-bus road trip of the week.

Louisville Trinity (2-3, 6A No. 2) vs. Louisville Saint Xavier (4-2, 6A No. 4) at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium--BluegrassPreps.com has the 411 on the rivalry's history; the Rocks lead the all-time series, 37 wins to 36 for St. X with two ties. The Courier-Journal looks at the game's historical attendance and new stars.

Lexington Catholic (4-2, 4A No. 6) at Boyle County (6-0, 4A No. 2)--A. Bell reports at @BigRebelNation that Boyle leads the all-time series, 11-9, and that "the tension between the two teams has grown over the years."

Bowling Green Warren Central (3-3, 4A) at Owensboro (5-1, 5A No. 5)--As Jared Pedley with SurfKy.com points out, the Dragons appear to have come around after a slow start.

Bowling Green South Warren (6-0, 3A No. 2) at Daviess County (3-2, 6A)--The visiting Spartans have outscored their six opponents so far by a total of 240-3.

Corbin (5-0, 3A No. 4) at Wayne County (6-0, 3A No. 3) and London North Laurel (5-0, AP 5A No. 7) at Pulaski County (6-0, AP 6A No. 2)--Les Dixon covers both visitors for The Times-Tribune, and he writes that each team tonight gets its "first big test of the season."

Murray (2-3, 2A No. 10) at Barlow Ballard Memorial (5-1, 2A No. 9)--Dangerous night for the home-standing Bombers. Have they recovered from last week's disappointing trip to No. 1 Caldwell County?

Christian Academy-Louisville (6-0, 2A No. 3) at Bardstown (4-1, 2A No. 7)--Dangerous night for the home-standing Tigers. Have they recovered from last week's disappointing trip to No. 2 Louisville DeSales?

Gallia Academy (Ohio) at Belfry (5-0, 3A No. 1)

Marshall County (0-5, 6A) at Crittenden County (3-2, 2A)--But the Marshals look great!

McCracken County (3-2, 6A) at Graves County (4-1, 5A No. 10)--I wonder what triggered the change in Coach Orville J's "system" from two-passes-per-game-at-Heath to air-it-out-at-Lone Oak.

Caldwell County (6-0, 2A No. 1) at Green County (3-3, 2A)

Harrison County (2-4, 4A) at Fort Thomas Highlands (6-0, 4A No. 1)

Paducah Tilghman (1-5, 3A) at Madisonville-North Hopkins (2-4, 4A)--It will be interesting to see if the Blue Tornado remains "the state's best one-win team" after this trip.

Fulton City (1-4, A) at Mayfield (6-0, A No. 1)--"Mayfield senior quarterback Jake Guhy should be in the Mr. Football conversation," declares Mike Fields in the Lexington Herald-Leader.
Bardstown Bethlehem (5-0, A No. 8) at Paris (4-1, A)

  10. The new Associated Press polls are out:

-- In Class 6A, Louisville Trinity (3-3) received the most first-place votes but remains No. 2 behind Scott County (6-0). Edgewood Dixie Heights has entered the poll at No. 10, and McCracken County is now tops among "others receiving votes."

-- In 5A, Bowling Green (6-0) remains tops, receiving 17 of 18 first-place votes--No. 4 Franklin County (7-0) gets the 17th. Harlan County (3-3) is back into the poll at No. 10.

-- In 4A, Fort Thomas Highlands (7-0) remains tops, but No. 2 Boyle County (7-0) has one believer who is keeping the Bluebirds from unanimous No. 1.

-- In 3A, the top four are Belfry (6-0 and 14 first-place votes), Wayne County (7-0 and two), Bourbon County (6-0 and one) and Bowling Green South Warren (6-1 and one).

-- In 2A, Caldwell County (7-0) is still the 1, but the Louisvillians are tightening. DeSales (7-0) is No. 2 with four first-place votes, and Christian Academy (7-0) is No. 3 with one. Somerset (3-3) has taken Ballard Memorial's No. 9 spot in the poll.

-- In A, Mayfield (7-0) scores as the state's only unanimous No. 1. Last week's 1 through 10 repeats in order, except the old No. 8 fell out. In a classic church-vs.-state battle, Bardstown Bethlehem lost its spot to Frankfort (4-2).
