Coming to Frenchburg ... "This is a small part of a video released by a Hollywood company in 1944 to help convince American audiences that the World War II refugees who were immigrating were, collectively, a very positive thing for the U.S.A. ... This brief segment focuses on my father, Richard F. Adler MD, and also includes a short sequence with my mother, Alice Blau Adler MD. They were both Viennese who got out after the Anschluss ... My mother's family, except for her sister who had emigrated to Scotland, were all killed by the Nazis ..."

Oh, Kentucky
Kentucky for sale (but not anymore--this dude was gone about five minutes after it posted yesterday, sold for $7):
Kentucky is not joining the constitutional-convention bandwagon (for now).
Georgetown is considering considering a fairness ordinance.
Henderson is going to take a long look at World War I.
Good jobs news from Hanson (thanks to expansion of one of the companies that sponsors the fantastic Bob Mays KHSAA-history site).
A bridge inspector and maintenance superintendent took a break from their Kentucky Transportation Cabinet duties last week to read to Staffordsville Head Start students.
"If you have to decide if you have enough gun on you for an event, perhaps you should rethink going to that event."

Rest in Peace, Carl Duane "Red" Nickell (1925-2013)
They're having a funeral this morning at Paducah's Broadway United Methodist Church for Carl Duane "Red" Nickell, and, wow ... 1944 Augusta Tilghman all-state blocking back/quarterback, "Battle of the Bulge" award winner, student medical trainer for coaches Bryant and Rupp at UK, Paducah junior-high football-coaching success, desegregation-advocating director of Paducah's public parks, Troop 3 Scoutmaster, Sunday-school teacher, transporter of elderly and disabled opthalmology patients, ref, father of two sons, husband of 64 years ... What a life!
And then here's a post at the Miller and Orr Funeral Home web site from yesterday evening:
Ms. Nickell, This is Jason McClure. I don't know if you remember me or not, but I used to do your pest control service with Terminix. I want you to know how sorry I am to hear about Mr. Nickell. I always looked forward to coming to your house each time and getting to spend a few minutes talking to you. You and Mr. Nickell were always so kind to me and I want you to know you will always have a special place in my heart. Sincerely, Jason
Man ... doesn't get any sweeter than that.
Rest in peace, Mr. Nickell. Well done, Mr. McClure. Hooray for people!
