He was the All-Star leading scorer on the red, white and blue Washington Bullets, which won the NBA championship when I was 9 years old and went to the NBA Finals three times before I turned 11. Plus, his nickname was "The Big E," and there was this commercial. So, yes, Elvin Hayes was absolutely my favorite NBA player when I was a kid.
In this game I’m watching from Sunday afternoon, March 4, 1979, CBS Sports color commentator “Hot Rod” Hundley just referred to the fast-breaking Lakers—with Kenny Carr, Adrian Dantley, (Russellville’s) Jim Price, Dave Robisch (in for Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) and Charlie Scott on the floor (and “Magic" Johnson at Michigan State)—as “Showtime."
ReplyDeleteHot Rod seems bothered that Abdul-Jabbar takes such long rests during the games, that he reportedly has a collection of 3,000 jazz records and that he makes so much money (also that Charlie Scott, says Brent Musburger, now wants to be called "Charles").
ReplyDeleteFilming for Airplane! is coming up June 20-Aug. 31, 1979.
