XXV Olympic Winter Games, Milano Cortina 2026 (More)

The Winter Olympics over the last few cycles has been turning for me into the World Series of Curling with a whole bunch of other events and hoopla going on around and outside the arena. Kind of like when they used to play some basketball games and have a parade in connection with the Sugar Bowl. Maybe they still do.

Anyway, curling is fascinating, and I love it. The United States’ mixed-doubles team—a Corey and a Corey, “the Coreys”—has advanced to the medal round after two thrilling wins Sunday. Right now on USA Network, I’m enjoying their preliminary-round match, or round-robin match, or first-round match or whatever with the Italians. I’m sure the outcome here has bearing on seeding for the medal round, but I don’t really care. I’m treating this as more of a Monday-morning victory lap, and I’m hoping to not get too worked up because I need to focus on other things.

I enjoyed the Olympics over the weekend, mostly on mute, and I’m enjoying rooting for my American home slices, despite what an awful period we’re in as a nation.

In his first term, President Trump lied and got a bunch of people killed and clobbered a lot of young Americans’ mental health and good feelings about the country, because he was too scared of what would happen to himself if he told the truth about COVID-19 being an airborne virus in the first several weeks of 2020. In his second term, he appears to be willing to do or say anything he can to enrich himself and his family and to distract his shrinking base of idolators from the pedophilia. (Also, over both terms so far, he has been awful to immigrants, refugees and other groups of vulnerable people, and our best moments in those areas are my favorite things about U.S. history and the primary reasons I am patriotic.)

There is no plan. Certainly, President Trump doesn't have one; this poor abused and sick fellow is just hurting and lashing out. And while there are people around him who have their plans, it's just that they all think they're actually the smartest ones in the room, cleverly owning the libs or using Trump as a Trojan horse or whatever. But don’t kid yourself—there is no plan, and we’re dangerously lost. You can't fool around with somebody like this. We should've never done so.

It’s hard to imagine how we’re going to ever recover from President Trump, at least in my lifetime. We’re all just going to have to pray however we pray, and we’re all just going to have try our best in our own little ways and places. This is where we are. It’s awful. Please, God, for better.

And, of course, in the meantime, it’s hard to have fun chanting U! S! A! … U! S! A! ..., as nothing at all feels U or fun. That stinks. But I'm fifty-freaking-seven years old, and the Winter Olympics come around only once every four years. So, go Coreys. It's 6-6 going into the eighth and final end on USA Network.

  1. American Coreys are back on the ice against the Italians for the medal-round semifinals, and it's 5-4, United States, through four ends.

It would be cool if there was a curling league that played its matches on weekday very early mornings before most of the competitors have to go in to work. I would totally tune into that.

  2. Coreys' lead is now 7-5 through six of eight ends.

  3. Italians are up, 8-7, through seven. Come on, Coreys!

  4. 9-8, COREYS WIN! The United States will be curling for mixed-doubles gold! VERY GREAT!

  5. Everyone should watch the Netflix special on the 1980 Olympic Hockey Team. It's outstanding.

  6. I also watched the first episode of the Netflix special on Ice Dancing. It was OK -- I probably won't watch the other episodes.

  7. Two of my old favorites going at it tonight in men's hoops: Louisville (17-6) is hosting NCSU (18-6). Both teams could use a win.

  8. I think the only teams that could have threatened Seattle were the Rams and the Broncos.

  9. The Broncos were eliminated when Bo Nix got hurt against the Bills. The Rams blew their chance when they fumbled a punt in the third quarter against Seattle.

  10. Seattle is a worthy champion. They won the double -- they were the best team in the regular season and the playoffs.

  11. With 1:34 left in the first half, Mikel Brown, Jr. is on fire. He has 21 points already, and the Ville is crushing NCSU 54 to 34.

  12. I haven't seen anyone for Louisville play this well since 1986. Mikel Brown Jr. has 32 points with 15:17 left in the game. He is 8-11 from 3-point range. The Ville are rolling, 75 to 42, and the Card fans are going nuts -- as they should.

  13. At one point Brown scored 11 points in a row. My goodness.

  14. Now we need to wrap this game up quickly so we can see the Main Event: Kansas v. Arizona.

  15. Mikel Brown Jr. sets a freshman U of L record with 45 points, including 10-16 from behind the arc. The Cards roll over the Wolfpack by a score of 118 to 77.

    1. Brown's 45 points tied the all-time U of L record.

    2. I can't remember the last game where an individual player looked this good. Brown looked like Steph Curry out there.

  16. U of L jumps from 19 to 15 on Ken Pom.

  17. At the half, undefeated Arizona leads Kansas 45-42.

  18. With 10 minutes left, Arizona leads 64-63, but KU just got away with a blatant walk.

  19. If you want to win at KU, you must have a big lead at the end -- the Jayhawks don't lose close games at home.

  20. With 8:42 left, the Jayhawks lead 67-64, and Arizona has to call time. The blatant cheating always distracts the other team, and KU takes advantage of your anger.

  21. UK went there in 2016, and we were cheated so badly I never wanted to go back.

  22. In 2022, we went back and crushed them by 18 points -- one of the greatest games I ever saw the Cats play. We were later eliminated by St. Peter's, and they won the National Title. I will never understand that.

  23. In December 2023, UConn -- the defending national champions -- went there and lost by only four. I knew then that UConn would repeat, because only a great team could have kept the game that close.

  24. That was the last game I watched at Phog Allen Fieldhouse -- until tonight.

  25. It is honestly hilarious watching the Arizona guys trying to get to the rim. They are knocked off their stride every time -- they've missed about 10 short shots in a row. The Jayhawks are up 73-67 with 4:35 left, and this game is over.

  26. College players, no matter how good they are, will find it almost impossible to score if they're being hit while they shoot.

  27. Arizona isn't handling the Phog as well as UConn did in 2023. The UConn guys knew they were the better team, understood what time it was, and didn't get too upset about the whole thing. The Arizona guys are going to lose an undefeated season, and they are not happy.

  28. KU moves to 40-0 in home games on Big Monday with Coach Self.

  29. Matt Jones is complaining that KU has a better home environment than UK. But KU is in contention for the Final Four every year, and UK hasn't been close in a long time.

  30. Plus, KU fans are betting on a sure thing.
