Ryder Cup Update

We like to pretend that the Ryder Cup is somewhat competitive, but it's really lopsided.  Since 1995, our record in the Ryder Cup is 4-10.  To put that figure in perspective, consider that Auburn went 5-12 against Nick Saban in the Iron Bowl.  So we beat Europe about as often as Auburn beat Nick Saban.

  1. The Americans are 4-3 at home since 1995, and 0-7 on the road.

  2. In the morning foursomes, the Americans are getting stomped:

McIlroy and Fleetwood beat Morikawa and English 5 & 4
Aberg and Fitzpatrick beat Scheffler and Henley 5 & 3
Rahm and Hatton beat DeChambeau and Thomas 4 & 3

Schauffele and Cantlay are 1 up with five holes left. If they can't hold on, the Europeans could be up 4-0.

  3. To be fair, I just don't think our team is very good. Scheffler is the only guy on our team who is the equal of McIlroy, Aberg, and Rahm.

  4. After losing the 12th hole, the 13th hole, and the 15th hole, Schauffele and Cantlay are now tied with MacIntyre and Hovland with two holes left.

  5. Schauffele and Cantlay win the last two holes and take the match 2 up. That keeps the Americans' hopes alive, but they trail 3-1 after the morning session.

  6. Now they've started the four-balls. I really wish they would go back to calling foursomes "alternate shot" and calling the four-balls "best ball." I don't care what the Brits call them -- I need to be able to tell them apart.

  7. Here are the afternoon matchups:

Scheffler and Spaun v. Rahm and Straka
This should be a close match.

Griffin and DeChambeau v. Fleetwood and Rose
Unless DeChambeau breaks the course record, this should be an easy win for the Europeans.

Young and Thomas v. Aberg and Hojgaard
Aberg should be able to win this one by himself.

Burns and Cantlay v. McIlroy and Lowry
The Americans have effectively conceded this match by fielding such a weak team against what is probably Europe's strongest team.

  8. So it's very likely that the Europeans will be up 6-2 or 7-1 after the afternoon session. I think this could very well be the worst Ryder Cup team the United States has ever fielded.

  9. I watch a lot of golf, and I'm not sure I've ever seen Ben Griffin or Sam Burns play more than a hole or two. I remember Cameron Young being in contention at the U.S. Open (or maybe the British Open) one year, but I recall that as like a plucky underdog story and I've never thought of him as a Ryder Cup player. But I guess these are the best guys we've got.

  10. I think Bradley should have put himself on the team -- he's better than most of these guys.

  11. EUR: Rahm and Straka 1 UP (thru 5)
USA: DeChambeau and Griffin 1 UP (thru 5)
USA: Young and Thomas 1 UP (thru 4)
TIED: Burns and Cantlay TIED (thru 3)

  12. The month we started the HP (June 2010), the Dow closed at 9,774.02. Today the Dow is trading at 46,318.16.

  13. Scheffler is going to lose another match:

EUR: Rahm and Straka 2 UP (thru 8)
USA: Griffin and DeChambeau 1 UP (thru 7)
USA: Young and Thomas 2 UP (thru 6)
1/2: Both sides TIED (thru 5)

  14. It's getting ugly now:

EUR: Rahm and Straka 3 UP (thru 11)
1/2: Both sides TIED (thru 11)
USA: Young and Thomas 3 UP (thru 10)
EUR: McIlroy and Lowry 2 UP (thru 9)

So if these trends continue, Europe will lead 5 1/2 to 2 1/2 after the first day, and this latest iteration of the Ryder Cup will basically be over. That will give the Americans a record of 4-11 since 1995. They really aren't good at this.

  15. EUR: Rahm and Straka 3 UP (thru 15)
EUR: Fleetwood and Rose 1 UP (thru 14)
USA: Young and Thomas WIN 6 & 5
1/2: Both sides TIED (thru 13)

    Projected score: EU 5 1/2 to 2 1/2.

  16. Rahm and Straka finally put Scheffler and Spaun out of their misery. The Europeans win 3 & 2, in a match that was never close, and they take a 4-2 lead overall.

  17. Fleetwood and Rose close out Griffen/DeChambeau 1 UP. The Europeans now lead 5-2. The last match is tied with two holes left.

  18. I think this is the worst Ryder Cup team that the United States has ever fielded.
