MLB All-Star Game

On July 14, 1987, the National League beat the American League in the All-Star Game at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum.  The score was 2-0 in 13 innings.  At that point, the National League led the all-time All Star Series 37 to 20 (with one tie).  Since then, believe it or not, the National League has gone 7-28-1 in the All-Star Game.  The American League now has the all-time lead:  48-44-2 over the NL.  The AL has also won 10 of the last 11 matchups.

Tonight's matchup is at Truist Park in Cumberland, Georgia -- the home of the Atlanta Braves.  After two innings, the NL leads 2-0.

  1. The All-Stars are back to wearing their team uniforms, which is historically one of the best things about the game.

  4. I knew four players on the AL team, although I only recently learned that Gleyber Torres is no longer with the Yankees. I knew seven players on the NL team.

  5. After many years, I have come up with a turntable/receiver/speaker combination that works, so I am listening to some records I haven't heard in a while. Tonight we are going with "Stormy Weekend" by the Mystic Moods Orchestra.

  6. In the top of the 5th, with the NL defending that 2-0 lead, the Senior Circuit brings in pitcher MacKenzie Gore, who I think is the only Washington National on the team. It's a huge deal for Nats fans, but it could give the AL a chance to get on the board.

  7. But no! Gore mows down the AL on eight pitches, and NL maintains its 2-0 lead.

  8. In the bottom of the 6th, Fernando Tatis, Jr. (Padres) walks, Brendan Donovan (Cardinals) singles, and Pete Alonso (Mets) brings them home with a three-run blast. The Senior Circuit leads 5-0.

  9. The Senior Circuit gets another homer from Corbin Carroll (D-backs) and leads 6-0 after six. Now I'm listening to "Every Picture Tells a Story," by Rod Stewart.

  10. The back of "Every Picture Tells a Story," where each of the songs is presented as a piece of 1920's sheet music, is my favorite back of any album.

  11. And here comes the Junior Circuit! In the top of the 7th, Alejandro Kirk (Blue Jays) reaches on a single. Jonathan Aranda (Rays) walks. The NL turns to Randy Rodriguez (Giants), and the AL responds with Brent Rooker (Swingin' A's). Rooker immediately blasts a three-run homer to center, and the NL's lead is now 6-3.

  12. Maikel Garcia (Royals) walks, steals second, advances to third on a throwing error, and scores on a groundout. After 6 1/2 innings, the NL leads 6-4.
