Programming Note

If the A's beat the Nationals this afternoon to move to 7-8 on the season, I plan to start paying attention to baseball again.

  1. Sunday, August 29, 1971 was the last time that the Washington Senators played a game in Oakland. It was also the last meeting between the Senators and the Athletics. The two teams played a double header. In the first game, Vida Blue pitched a complete game in 2 hours and 7 minutes, and Reggie Jackson hit his 25th homer of the year. The Senators made five errors, and the A's won 4-3.

  2. In the second game, Catfish Hunter pitched a complete-game shutout in 2 hours and 8 minutes. Denny McLain took the loss, falling to 9-17 on the year, and the A's beat up on the Senators' bullpen, winning 9-0.

  3. There were 24,977 people at this double-header. The Senators saw their record fall to 55-77, while the A's ran their record to 86-47.
