  1. Salyersville is one of the best town names in Kentucky. As is "Magoffin Co." Faulkner could not have made up better names.

    1. The Salyersville Independent Facebook page shared pictures of the Rupp Arena scoreboard throughout the game. It reminds me of an old picture I saw one time of the Bowling Green Daily News parking lot, where people had gathered during a World Series game to follow a big scoreboard updated by reporters following the wire. Here were some of the newspaper's captions during today's game:

-- "Starting off with a tight game," after the first quarter ended in a 13-13 tie

-- "Keep closing the gap, boys!" with Magoffin trailing, 38-35, to open the fourth

-- "Last minute!" with the Hornets now ahead, 51-43, and 59.4 seconds showing on the clock

-- "SEE YOU ON FRIDAY!!!!!!" (final)

    2. Bowling Green, of course, wasn’t the only place where this sort of thing happened. Here’s an item from Page 1 of the Oct. 2, 1926, Fresno (California) Morning Republican:

SEE THE WORLD’S SERIES—PLAY BY PLAY—ON THE REPUBLICAN’S MAGNETIC SCOREBOARD

The Republican’s magnetic scoreboard, located on the corner of Van Ness and Tulare streets, will give a play by play story of the world’s series, beginning at 10:30 this morning. Each ball thrown, each catch, eat hit will be reproduced precisely as appears in the Yankee stadium, New York. The world’s fastest service—The Associated Press—will make possible instantaneous reproduction.

If you cannot be at Van Ness and Tulare, call 4023 and simply say BASEBALL and an operator will give you the latest report.

    3. The 1926 World Series was one of the greatest ever played. It was also hugely important in Western Kentucky, because it was the first World Series to feature the St. Louis Cardinals.

  2. Oh, my goodness. Lyon County led Ashland 26 to 17 at the half. The Lyons then completely collapsed. Ashland went on a 24-8 run, and led 41 to 34 with about five minutes left in the game. Lyon Co. then came back to life, and took a 42-41 lead with four minutes left.

  3. Finally, with the score tied at 43, Lyon Co. had the ball with a minute to go. Ashland stayed in their zone defense, so Lyon ran out the clock. With 3.2 seconds left, Brady Shoulders was fouled on a drive to the basket. He made both free throws. Ashland then had a three at the buzzer. It MISSED, and LYON COUNTY WINS, 45 to 43.

  4. If you remember what UK looked like under Pitino, today's game was like one of those games where the Cats couldn't make any three-pointers. Ashland spent the whole game in a zone, and Lyon County went 2 of 16 from three-point range. Meanwhile, Ashland went 6 of 16.

  5. Lyon County survived in the same way that Pitino's teams survived this type of game -- with a pressing defense. They forced 14 turnovers, including 9 steals, and that's what saved them.

  6. Travis Perry never really got going -- he had 16 points, but was only 1 of 7 from three-point range. Still, the Lyons survived against a very good team.

  7. While Boyd County was the favorite in the Sixteenth Region, I thought drawing Ashland was a bad break for the Lyons. Ashland has been to State four years in a row, and nothing was going to intimidate them.

  8. Now in our half of the state, you have fans wondering if they've used up their luck and thereby jinxed UK. But in Ashland's half, you have fans hoping that since they had bad luck against Lyon Co., maybe the Cats will have better luck.

  9. The fact that I'm only just now learning the score of the Dodgers' first game of the season is a bad sign for MLB.

  10. With 2 1/2 minutes left in the first quarter, Adair leads Marshall 12-7.

  11. Well, at first Marshall and Adair looked to be evenly matched. But Adair has made at least four three-point shots, and Marshall hasn't made any. After one quarter, Adair's Indians lead the Marshals 18 to 9.

  12. Adair County shoots the lights out -- making 9 of 17 from three-point range -- and beats Marshall County 69 to 58. The Indians advance to face Lyon Co. on Friday.

  13. The last game of the day features the Number One team in the State -- Great Crossing H.S. of Georgetown. The last time we saw Great Crossing, they were hitting a shot at the buzzer to win the Eleventh Region over Lex. Catholic. Today's game -- against Spencer Co. -- seemed likely to be easier. But after three quarters, Spencer Co. and Great Crossing are tied at 44.

  14. Spencer Co. 48 - 50 Great Crossing (5:06 left). Micah Moreno, the star for GCHS, already has 22 points and 17 rebounds.

  15. Spencer Co. 48 - 58 Great Crossing (2:43 left). Moreno absolutely dominating on both ends now, but also getting a lot of good shooting by the rest of this team.

  16. In the fourth quarter, Great Crossing outscores Spencer County 18 to 4. They win the game 62 to 48. Moreno finishes with 24 points and 19 rebounds. Great Crossing advances to play Magoffin Co. on Friday.

  17. It's going to be fun to see Reed Sheppard, Travis Perry and Malachi Moreno all playing for Kentucky in a few years.
