Wimbledon Update

With one week to go, here are the quarter-finalists in the women's singles draw (seeds in parentheses):

(1) Iga Swiatek (POL) v. Elina Svitolina (UKR)
(4) Jessica Pegula v. Marketa Vondrousova (CZE)
(3) Elena Rybakina (KAZ) v. (6) Ons Jabeur (TUN)
(2) Aryna Sabalenka (BLR) v. (25) Madison Keys

It's pretty exciting to see all four top seeds make it this far, and we still have two Americans in contention.

  1. Here are the men's quarter-finalists. Congratulations to Christopher Eubanks, the lone American. And don't ask me why the 1 seed is playing the 6 seed, because that makes no sense:

    (1) Carlos Alcaraz (ESP) v. (6) Holger Rune (DEN)
    (3) Daniil Medvedev (RUS) v. Christopher Eubanks
    (8) Jannik Sinner (ITA) v. Roman Safiullin (RUS)
    (2) Novak Djokovic (SRB) v. (7) Andrey Rublev (RUS)

  2. Elina Svitolina, who entered the tournament as a Wild Card, upsets the number one seed, Iga Swiatek: 7-5, 6-7, 6-2. Meanwhile, Marketa Vondrousova, who was unseeded, defeats the number four seed, American Jessica Pegula: 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. So Svitolina will face Vondrousova in one of the semi-finals.

  3. I stayed the last several days in a Sanford, Florida, Residence Inn, and Wimbledon played constantly on one of the TVs in the lobby. I really enjoyed catching two or three points every time I came through.

  4. On the men's side, Jannik Sinner eliminates Roman Safiullin, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. Djokovic is up two sets to one over Andrey Rublev.

  5. Djokovic wins 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, 6-3. It's impossible to overstate how strong Djokovic looks. So far he's played five matches. He has won 15 sets and lost only 2. He looks like a Dad just trying to teach his kids how to play.

  7. All the Americans are out. On the ladies' side, Ons Jabeur beat Elena Rybakina, 6-7, 6-4, 6-1, while Aryna Sabalenka beat Madison Keys 6-2, 6-4. On the men's side, in a match that was very entertaining for about 90 minutes, Daniil Medvedev beat Christopher Eubanks 6-4, 1-6, 4-6, 7-6, 6-1.

  8. The Kentucky basketball team is in Canada, and Ugonna Onyenso is already injured.

  9. Kyle Tucker reports that Kentucky is "pressing and running" in its game with Germany. That's how you know it's an exhibition. We won't see a lot of "pressing and running" once the season starts.
