Having led the Sydney Kings to a second-straight NBL championship last week, Xavier Cooks officially joined the Wizards yesterday (but did not play against the Cavs). I can’t find that anyone has reported when the 27-year-old, slender and 6-foot-8 power forward from Ballarat, Australia, (and Winthrop University) will start playing for Washington. But it does appear to me that his Cooks's leading us to 12 straight wins to close the regular season would get the Wizards solidly in to the play-in tournament.
Seven losses in the last nine game for the Wizards, still No. 22 in Zach Harper’s NBA power rankings for The Athletic. The latest was at home, 132-118, to the Kings.
Zach Harper's new NBA power rankings are up at The Athletic, and the Bucks remain No. 1:
ReplyDelete21. Washington Wizards (previously 19th) | 31-37 | -0.5 net rating
Weekly slate: Win at Pistons, Loss to Hawks, Loss to Hawks, Loss at Sixers
Lineup: Monte Morris | Bradley Beal | Kyle Kuzma | Kristaps Porziņģis | Daniel Gafford
Stats: 99 minutes | +16.1 net rating | 127.5 offensive rating | 111.4 defensive rating
If the Wizards were able to play this lineup a couple hundred more minutes this season, they’d be challenging for the top-six, rather than a half game out of the Play-In Tournament. The Wizards took a while to find the pairing of Porziņģis and Gafford, but it’s proven to provide the right stability on both ends of the floor. Then you factor in Beal’s overall play and Kuzma’s impact this season, and it’s easy to see why this has been effective. But it’s only played in 11 games, and an average of nine minutes per game. The Wizards have suffered, once again, because of a lack of availability.
Washington has lost seven of its last 10 games.

My main man from Ballarat, Xavier Cooks, made his NBA debut Saturday and logged two rebounds and a turnover in six minutes of action.

DeleteI enjoy reading most everything that I read that is written by The Athletic's Wizards beat writer, Josh Robbins:

It's not quite a must-win, but the Wizards' game tonight in Orlando is critical for their Play-In hopes. Both the 11th-place Wizards and 10th-place Bulls have 11 regular-season games remaining, and the Wizards trail the Bulls by two games in the standings.
