The first radio station in Kentucky -- WHAS in Louisville -- went on the air on July 18, 1922. The call letters were randomly assigned by the U.S. Department of Commerce, and WHAS has kept them to this day. The station was originally owned by the Courier-Journal and Louisville Times.
The Kentucky Derby was broadcast on the radio for the first time on May 16, 1925.
The next year -- on April 24, 1926 -- Cawood Ledford was born.
One of the legends of WHAS was that it could be heard after World War II in Tokyo if the skies were right.
