Survivor Pool

So this year, for the NFL season, I'm going to try making survivor picks.  In case you aren't aware of this game, here are the rules:

1.  Each week, I have to pick a team to win a game.

2.  If the team wins, or ties, I survive to the next week.

3.  If the team loses, I'm out.

4.  I cannot use any team more than once.  So each week I have to pick a different team.

Let's see how far I can get.  I think the games in Week One are actually quite challenging -- I really don't see any sure things.  But I'm going with the Rams over the Bears on Sunday night.  I'm hoping that the Rams at home will be ready to put on a special effort for the fans in their new stadium.

  1. I think your pick looks best of the Week 1 slate. I also like the Washington Football Team at home against the Chargers early Sunday, and I kind of like the Raiders on Monday night at home against the Ravens.

  2. I wish you had asked me about the Football Team. I could have given you some advice there.

    1. That was fantastic. Huge day for the Dolphins. Huge day for the Chiefs.

  4. This will be the 94th meeting between the Bears and Rams, who spent many decades in the same division. The Bears lead the all-time series with a record of 53-37-3.

    1. I've decided to regard the Chicagos as my second-favorite team in each sport. In this way, the Bears have supplanted (in order at various times over the course of my life) the Rams, Buccaneers, Lions, Packers and Panthers; the Bulls, the Suns; the White Sox and Cubs, the Astros, Yankees, Mets and Nationals, and the Blackhawks, the Hurricanes.

  5. According to Pro Football Reference, the three greatest players for the Bears (since 1960) are Walter Payton, Mike Singletary, and Brian Urlacher. The three greatest players for the Rams over the same period are Merlin Olson, Jack Youngblood, and Jackie Slater.

    1. My all-time-favorite Bear is Virgil Livers, and my all-time-favorite Ram is probably Isiah Robertson.

  6. Every year, I tell myself that this will be the season I finally get serious about watching Sunday Night Football. Every year, I end up watching most of about six games, and parts of about eight more. The problem is that by Sunday night, I've already watched a lot of football. The other problem is that once you get to October, I'm watching the baseball playoffs. But for now, I'm ready to get serious about Sunday Night Football.

    1. When the Patriots were driving late last night, I thought to myself how I might not watch another second of NFL21. Then the Dolphins recovered the fumble, and now I'm thinking about investing in all of the services.

  7. Rams out to an early 10-0 lead, and looking very strong. The whole NFC West has looked great today. Meanwhile, I'm listening to "Nomads, Indians, and Saints" by the Indigo Girls. What a great album.

  8. When I watch a game at the L.A. Coliseum or the Rose Bowl, I know the teams are in Southern California. In the Rams' new stadium, they appear to be playing this game in some place like Dallas or Atlanta.

  9. I still like that "Scoop, There It Is" commercial.

    1. ME, TOO! This was the only part of the entire broadcast last night that I took off mute. I want to learn that dance where the two people bump their feet together.

  10. Rams up 13-0 with 4:42 left in the second quarter. ESPN gives them an 89.4 percent chance of victory.

  11. Rams lead 13-7 at the half, as Andy Dalton leads the Bears to a late touchdown. NBC is very frustrated that the Bears aren't using Justin Fields at QB.

  12. Matt Stafford throws a bomb to put the Rams up 20-7 early in the second half. On TV, Stafford's wife seems really happy to be out of Detroit. Meanwhile, every time I look up at the screen I wonder "why are the Rams and Bears playing in Atlanta"?

    1. Every time I looked up I wondered, "Why do they keep showing pictures of Justin Fields if he isn't playing?"

  13. Rams lead 27-14 with 10 minutes to go in the 4th. Bears have a 4th and 15 at the Ram 30. They go for it. They don't get it. Rams take over with 10:01 left and a 13-point lead.

  14. The decision not to play Justin Fields did not work out for the Bears. They are trounced 34-14, and I have survived for another week.
