Album Reviews: Halsey and Mac Miller

Adult Language

Halsey: Manic

Ashley Frangipane, aka Halsey, was 24 when this album was put together and so I'm guessing this will be the best of her career, and it is a good album. If you want to dive into the angst of what it is to be a 20 something woman who is struggling with self worth, disappointment, and frustration then you've hit on a good one with this album. This album makes me think of so many friends I had in my 20's and their struggles. It is rare to find an album where the songs are so emotionally raw and revealing and it gives this album some real value to me.

On top of the lyrics being quite interesting Halsey is a good performer who wears her influences, like Bjork, on her sleeve. I appreciate that as it makes the music again seem so real and connected. It's a 3 out of 5 album for me.

Mac Miller: Circles

I had reviewed an album of his before and in fact picked one of his songs for my best of list back in 2013. So when I saw he had a new album out I put it on my playlist. Got to listening to it, and then got to reading about him to find out that he died 2 years ago. Only 26, so sad. This album was something he was working on at the time. Knowing that he died while working on this album it makes you think about it a bit differently I must say.

With Halsey you go into the mind of a young woman dealing with very raw frustrations and anxiety. With Circles you go into the world of someone who just doesn't seem very happy with their life and who ended up dying way to young because of their life choices. With the knowledge you look at the opening verse to the song "Circles" and it feels so ominous.

Well, this is what it look like right before you fall
Stumblin' around, you've been guessing your direction
Next step, you can't see at all
And I don't have a name, I don't have a name, no
Who am I to blame? Who am I to blame though?
And I cannot be changed, I cannot be changed, no
Trust me, I've tried
I just end up right at the start of the line
Drawin' circles
Still it's a solid album and worth a listen. I find him to be an interesting performer and give the album 2 out of 5 stars.
