Album Reviews: George Strait, Lizzo, Cage the Elephant

Album: Honky Tonk Time Machine

I like George Strait but I will say I'm not the biggest fan of honky tonk. Still the idea of George Strait doing an entire album of honky tonk music seemed OK to me. The problem is it's not a full album of honky tonk. It starts off that way and there are a few honky tonk songs scattered in, but the rest are just standard Nashville country tunes. It's the first George Strait album I've listened to where I felt like George probably showed up, sang his tracks and was out the door. He's a pro and can kick out an album like this without even having his coffee.

It's a fine album but don't expect to be blown away by any songs. I give this one 1 star out of 5. If you are in the mood for country music as background this is a good fit.

Album: Cuz I Love You

Explicit Language

I don't know what it is about this album. I don't know if it is all the curse words, or what but for some reason me and this album just never clicked. I listened to it a bunch of times and by track 6 or so I was usually ready to move on. When I listen to an individual track I don't think there is anything bad about it just not my thing. Of course I'm not the audience either. If I was still making run mixes then I would grab a few songs off of here for that, but definitely not something I'm putting on with the kids around. I give this one 1 star out of 5.

Album: Social Cues

Cage the Elephant have always been playing around with different influences. The 90's, the 80's, the 60's. We've heard them create entire albums revolving around a certain genre of influence and the thing I've always wondered is what is their sound. For some reason this album feels like that album. It feels much more natural and it feels much more of the time to me than their other stuff. I think where this one works is you can hear all of the influences coming through together.

If you are looking for a 2019 rock album I would say give this a listen and see what you think. I give this one 2 stars out of 5.

    1. I quit playing basketball several months ago because of a knee thing, but it turned out there was no structural damage. I'm hoping to return to action two weeks from tonight. I'm excited, because I was definitely playing the best basketball of my career before the injury.
