NFL72 Update

OK, here's where things stand through eight weeks of NFL72 ...

That's per Pro!, the official NFL game program for games of Sunday, Nov. 12, and Monday, Nov. 13, 1972 ...

At some point, I picked up a bound volume of all the Pro!s published for Washington Redskins home games in 1972 ...

I love game programs ...

I'm excited about working on my Football Crossword Puzzle all week ...

And I'll want to be sure to enter the Taster's Choice Super Bowl contest ...

Of course, I don't need all week to discern how I'm going to fill out my Vitalis NFL Man of the Year ballot ...

Tomorrow's game at RFK is Giants at Redskins ...

And, as you can see, I've got pretty big plans for it ...

  1. OK, first issue with my NFL Strategy innovation (to be introduced on an upcoming episode of HP "nth Podcast"), is the lack of impact on special teams. But you can't have everything. Immediately, anyway. Rocky Thompson returns the opening kickoff to the 45, and on trots an old familiar face to the RFK crowd, Norm Snead, to quarterback the Giants on this game's opening possession.

  2. Thankfully, there were no injuries on the opening kickoff! (Watch this space for more details on HP "nth Podcast!")

  3. WOW! On only the fifth of 33 first-quarter plays (podcast!), Snead flings deep over the Redskin zone, connects with racing Rich Houston on the 50 Z Post and Washington safeties Rosey Taylor and Brig Owens give futile chase. It's a 43-yard touchdown, and Charlie Gogolak's kick makes it, 7-0, in favor of New York.

  4. With the ground blanketed by leaves and Fall rapidly fading away, this normally was the time for us to stress the "Tradition" surrounding our series with the Giants and to sneak in a quick look-see at next year.

But today, well, the tradition is still there, and I know you will forgive us if we skip that part about the future. For the future is now.

We are leading the Eastern Division with a snappy 7-1 record and the Giants are one of our two top contenders. And while the tradition is there--this is the 71st game between the Redskins and Giants and that's about as traditional you can get in the National Football League--the facts underscore only one point: this game is a championship shoot-out in the Eastern Division.

If we win we will not only retain first place in the East but eliminate the Giants as contenders in the process. If the Giants win, the Eastern title is up for grabs between Dallas, the Giants and ourselves. To say that today is important is to understate the situation. As never before our future is TODAY.

  5. That's how "Redskin Magazine" editor David D. Slattery and assistant editors Joe F. Blair and Bob Bowser contextualized today's game in the black-and-white, Washington-specific material inserted in the glossy, color Pro wraparound. It seems Norm Snead and the Giants, at least, got the message of urgency!

  6. OK, dear readers of real 2018, that's it for today probably because I've got to get a shower and etc. Between now and early tomorrow morning, when I plan to get back to pretending this game, I suggest you fetch this blast from the recent HP past. Though it's from Christmas74 and "leaves and Fall" still linger, the music is somehow neither too late nor too soon but right in time to play along with this NFL72 recreation.

  10. Curt Knight's PAT is good, and it's knotted at seven through 23 of 33 first-quarter plays.

  11. And more bad news for New York: Linebacker Pat Hughes, injured on the touchdown play, will not return the rest of the afternoon (podcast!).

  12. On a happier note, I am thrilled to share some #breaking news: In my shower yesterday morning during the extended commercial break after this last play, I received the revelation that pretend NFL73 is expanding. The Evansville (Indiana) Crimson Giants will resume operations, and an unnamed franchise in Idaho will launch. I can't begin to tell you how happy this made me all day yesterday, and it makes me happy all over again this morning to type it.
