Album Review: Visuals by Mew

Mew is a Danish band that has been putting out albums for 20 years. I've never heard of them until this album was recommended to me by a coworker.

Listening to this album made me think of the big movement toward pop music in the alternative scene in the late 80's early 90's with bands like The Sundays, Gin Blossoms, The Railway Children, etc. Mew doesn't really sound like those bands, they are defined as more of a dream pop band, but for some reason it got me to thinking about those bands. It also made me think of another band, The Mighty Lemon Drops. The Mighty Lemon Drops was a band that seemed to have all the elements I liked in music at the time and it seemed like I should have really liked them, but I just found them to be OK. There were moments here and there I really liked but overall I just didn't like them that much and so I lost interest in them. This album from Mew strikes me the same way. It seems like I should like them more than I do, but there you have it.

I really like the song "The Wake of Your Life," even with its goofy intro. Nothing else on the album really stands out to me. Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 2 out of 5 stars for Not Bad.

  1. The first bit of the song in the YouTube video reminded me of T'Pau's "Heart And Soul." Then the vocal started, and it reminded me of "If You Leave," by Orchestral Manuevers in the Dark. Anyway, all of this made me very happy.
