Oh, Kentucky

Sure enough ... good jobs news from Corbin and Oak Grove.

Hiring in Hazard ($110-$120 per day, paid vacation and holidays ... but insurance?).

Is La Grange getting a Starbucks? Compelling local play-by-play from Glen Jennings in The Oldham Era.

A Kentucky Minute from Powell County, brought to us by Stanton's WSKV 104.9 FM "Pickup Country" ...

Georgetown considers joining Lexington and Pikeville in stiffening mask regulation.

The champion of Carlisle County's enhanced 911 rollout is hailed.

  1. The WSKV commentators note the problematic trend of the Powell County Fair Parade of "the folks getting closer and closer to the road every year."

  2. Right now, we have a series of vehicles showcasing baby-pageant contestants. And now here comes the 2017 Miss Powell County on the back of a convertible.

"These cars and trucks really clean up well," one of the WSKV guys says, and he's correct.

  3. There's something about ferns and the Powell County Fair. The back ends of a lot of the pickups in the parade are decorated with ferns.

    I love ferns.

  4. These WSKV commentators are really good. They're having a lot of fun noting how bad Stanton's mayor is at catching candy thrown from the parading vehicles.

  5. Now here come the Powell County High Pirate cross-country and soccer teams. The runners are marching in shorts and tank tops (red with stacked, connecting "P" and "C" in white--sort of like Paducah Tilghman's logo), and the soccer teams are wearing warmup suits and riding on decorated flatbed trailers. It appears both the girls' and boys' soccer floats placed in the best-in-parade judging.

  6. Stanton First Church of God went all out on its float. There was a giant gumball machine, and a big sign reading, "Jesus is the sweetest name I know."

WSKV notes that its live Facebook feed is up to 60 viewers. The commentators are optimistic of reaching 100 or more.

  7. The theme of the parade this year is "Fun and Games."

  8. OH, EXCELLENT! THE POWELL COUNTY SCHOOL BUSES ARE ROLLING THROUGH THE PARADE! That's a great idea. I've never seen that.

Powell County is among the many, many Kentucky school districts in dire need of additional bus drivers. Seriously, if the individual healthcare plans available in Hopkins County are unappealing, I might be looking into becoming a school-bus driver.

  9. Here come the fire trucks, and here comes about the most controversial I am probably going to put out there anywhere today: Enough with the sirens.

I, of course, appreciate firefighters. The firefighters in Madisonville actually came out and helped us get our cat down from a tree a few years ago. They were great. When they aren't busy risking their lives responding to real emergencies, the firefighters (here, at least) do all kinds of helpful, meaningful stuff like that. I appreciate every bit of that work, and I clap and cheer along with everyone else whenever fire trucks pass in a parade.

But, seriously, enough with the sirens.

  10. Well, I hate it that I ended on a down note, but it turns out the firefighters were pretty much the end of the parade in Stanton. If I'd known that, I'd've just said it at the beginning of the parade or some other point. The parade was great. Thanks to all of the people involved--and especially, given that I'm over here in Madisonville, the people at WSKV.

  11. I thought the horse racing industry was struggling and had been for years.
