Best Songs: In Another World by Watermelon Men

The song begins with the line, "Have you ever been to Argentina? The burning sun will wake you up believe me." This from a band out of Sweden. There is something about the simplicity of that line I've always loved.

Back in 1987 and 1988 my roommate and I would take all the money we had and go to Cut Corner Records in Lexington and blow it on albums. We were always looking for something new, something different. One day I picked up an album by a band called Watermelon Men, the album was Past, Present and Future. We immediately fell in love with the album and the next time back I picked up their other album Wildflowers.

Initially I preferred Past, Present and Future, over time I grew to like Wildflowers more, but from the first moment I ever heard this song it was one of my favorites.

This song is all youth and life.  All hope and want.  I don't know that any song I've ever heard best fits the energies and feelings you have as a young man as it pertains to road trips and hopes of love.

The opening to the song has a bit of a sad lilt to it but there is this ever driving ever hopeful sound to this song.  It is about as perfect a simple rock song as you can get.

I hope you'll enjoy this song as much as I do and I would highly recommend these first two albums of the band.

  1. This brings back fond memories of a TDK mix tape you mailed to me back in the day.

I never thought about it at the time, of course, but this song has a real dreamy Beach Boys feel to it.
